During the 1600s and the 1700s many people began to put great importance in on reason or logical thought. By using some reason, these people hoped to solve problems such as poverty and war and they believed the use of reason could achieve three great goals--knowledge, freedom, and happiness--and improve society. This is important because during the age of reason or the enlightenment new ideas of government took place.

During the Enlightenment, some people used reason to examined government by questioning how government worked and what the purpose of government should be. John Locke, and English philosopher, had a big influence on Enlightenment thinking about the role of government; he thought government should be a contract between a ruler and the people. Another scholar was Jean-Jacques, he said government should express their will or desire of the people. This is important because it spread ideas about the government far and wide.

Enlightenment ideas spread to the British colonies in North America; the British ruler's power was not limited as it was in England. In 1775, protests turned to violence, which started the Revolutionary war and in July 1776, Locke and Rousseau signed the Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson. This is important because the colonists had successfully put Enlightenment ideas into practice and their success would inspire many other people, particularly in France.
