I love watching children learn and grow as students and as human beings. I want to help them reach the highest heights they could possibly reach! Every time a child smiles at me, calls me Ms. Beckwith, or says they don’t want me to leave, I am filled with gratitude that I have the opportunity to be their teacher.

My philosophy of teaching follows that every child is capable of learning and wants to learn. Every child has potential, and it is the school’s and caregivers’ responsibility to help them reach that potential. Teachers create an academic plan for the student. Caregivers ensure that the child engages with the material at home. Administrators support the teacher’s academic mission and provide extra support that the students may need. ESL instructors, counselors, and reading specialists are all a part of the education community supporting our students. A supportive education community should surround the child at their local school.

I have chosen this philosophy because I have seen the effects of racism, sexism, and classism telling students that they cant accomplish their goals. My mother was told she couldn’t be a doctor, she persevered and became one anyway. I truly believe that every student CAN, and they just need a teacher's belief to get started. Humanizing students is the first step at looking at education through an equity lens.

Every student deserves my best teaching, but I am unable to give every student as much individual attention as they would like. I want students to know I support them, but I don’t want them to depend on me. I need to give them the tools to solve problems on their own. The goal is to have my students feel safe and secure and maintain a student-teacher relationship of respect.

I believe classroom collaboration is key to developing a classroom community. One exercise that I appreciate in my resident teacher’s classroom is thank you notes. If a student volunteered to help another student, or was the technology helper, or exercised kindness, the student would find a little thank you note made out of an index card and some stickers. Having rotating classroom responsibilities is also a great way to engage students in building classroom community. Students can learn from each other as well as the teacher. Learning how to achieve a group consensus, and collaborating through group discussions, can also foster classroom community.

Classroom Expectations and Routines

Students will help me create the classroom expectations at the beginning of the school year. I want my class to think, how can we create the best classroom environment for everyone? Any rule added after must have the approval of the class. As a teacher, I will guide the conversation so that the rules emphasize respect and equality in the classroom. These expectations will help the students develop an awareness of how their behavior affects other students. All of the class routines will be established within the first couple weeks of school. They will be on a poster that we made as a class. Using positive redirection will be key, ”Let’s make a better decision. Is that how we can be a respectful student? “. Students can be rewarded for following the classroom rules through group points. The class as a whole could also earn Friday Free time, or time for their favorite dance on GoNoodle.

One classroom procedure I will teach the students is the use of a signal word. Since my 2nd graders are so young, the signal word is to help them get into the habit of listening to all of the directions before acting on them. The signal word can vary every week to reflect a vocabulary word that we are focusing on. The signal word can be followed by hand gestures or ASL to help the children remember the meaning. The new vocabulary terms, which will be our signal words, will be introduced to the students on Mondays. The students will demonstrate their understanding of the word by writing a sentence as a group in the afternoon on Friday.

After coming in from recess, students will wait by the door to listen to the instructions before entering the classroom. If they still have high energy, students will enter groups of five to demonstrate how quiet they can be. If students are becoming excited in the classroom because it is almost recess, we can redirect their focus by doing some stretches together.

Anytime I give instructions, I will always have to consider if the students have done this before. This is especially important post-pandemic; the students haven’t done many aspects of group work or moving around the classroom before. Any new instructions will need significant scaffolding for classroom management.
