Greetings everyone and welcome to RSCH 503: Research Methods and Biostatistics. As Course Chair, I like to stop by and wish students a productive and enjoyable quarter. I live and work in Asheville, North Carolina and have just celebrated my 11th anniversary of working at Drexel as a full-time geographically remote faculty member. Winter is here in the Great Smokey Mountains and, the air is crisp. I often walk my dog, Smoke, in the woods and enjoy the fresh air and all of the sights, sounds, and critters that are all a part of the local nature (lots of bears, wild turkeys, bunnies, and, we definitely avoid the bobcats). I am a forensic psychiatric nurse and all of my research studies have utilized a mixed-methods design (one of the several designs that you will learn about in detail during the quarter ahead) to examine the intrapsychic impact and related behaviors in children who have been exposed to homicide, crime, and/ or sudden violent death. One example of my clinical forensic work includes a trip to Bolivia in 2011 with a team from Drexel CNHP. Since I am a forensic practitioner, my role was to work with psychologists, prosecutors and judges regarding enhanced assessment of children exposed to sexual violence. Below is a photo while working with children in the school room of the Domestic Violence Shelter/compound where they were residing (located at over 12 thousand feet in the Andes mountain range!). I got to meet quite a few alpacas during that time and fell in love with eating quinoa! Please help your peers and Dr. Grief learn more about each of you here in the Introductions Padlet. ONWARD YOU GO and Enjoy the course! - Dr. Clements

My name is Gelena Levin. I am working on MSN in Innovation and Intra/entrepreneurship in Advanced Nursing Practice. I live in Ewing NJ and work as Utilization Management Nurse in NJ hospital. Utilization Management is a unique area for RN where nurse needs to think out of the box, constantly to update her knowledge in different areas to be able to improve the cost effectiveness of the care without damage/disturb/decrease quality of care. I have completed B.A in Life Science in Israel, and have some knowledge in Nursing research. The course in Advance research will assist me with better understanding of the research outcomes, and the utilization of the appropriate research finding in my practice.I am trilingual, speaking Hebrew, Russian, and English. Living in three different countries, I have experienced the similarities and differences among many diverse cultural groups. This allowed me to relate to different types of people by understanding their ways of thinking and believes. When I am off, I like to travel and explore historical places and I love to eat in unique authentic restaurants.

Hello everyone! My name is Emily Beers. I live in Downingtown, PA, which is about an hour outside of Philadelphia. I did take a research course and a statistics course in my online BSN program through Slippery Rock University, but I suspect this class will be different and very helpful! I do not have any concerns about this course just yet. I hope to learn how to analyze various nursing research articles. I currently work as an emergency room nurse and fertility nurse. I started the Women's Health Nurse Practitioner Program at Drexel University this fall. I served 8 years in the Army on Active Duty and I was lucky enough to live in Alaska for a while. I hope to return there someday! I also deployed to Iraq and that was a humbling experience. I grew so much as a person there. I worked in the inpatient pharmacy at the Baghdad ER. I saw so many sad things but also I saw soldiers survive horrific trauma. That is when I knew I wanted to become a nurse. I also recently got married in November on Veteran's Day. I am an very active individual and I love the outdoors. My husband and I like to hike, workout together, and spend time with our English Bulldog. I am excited to meet other students in this course and see how this course will help me as I move forward in my nursing career.

Hello! My name is Hannah Church. I live in Baltimore City and currently work as a nurse in the Pediatric Emergency Department. I am in the MSN Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program and look forward to gaining research knowledge through this course. I have previously taken a research course in nursing school and also have some experience through my previous BA in Health Science and Sociology. Research has always been somewhat challenging for me in the past, so I hope this course makes me feel more confident in my research and data analysis skills. I have spent the last two years doing a lot of traveling before recently settling back home in Maryland. I spent a month in Greece and Italy before moving out to California for two years where I took travel nurse jobs in both San Diego and San Francisco. I drove across country both ways and had the most amazing time exploring as seen in the picture below at my stop in the Grand Canyon.

Hi, everyone. My name is Susan Kupstas. I am currently living in northeastern Pennsylvania. I have been working as an adult ICU nurse for the last seven years. Five of those were spent at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. For the last almost 3 years I've been working at Geisinger Wyoming Valley in Wilkes-Barre. We care for a diverse patient population, but my favorite is neurosurgery.

I am currently in the Adult Gerontological Acute Care Nurse Practitioner track. I did take a research course in my undergraduate studies and actually enjoyed it a great deal. Although I don't have any concerns regarding the course yet, I do hope to learn to more effectively use evidence based practice in my every day practice.

On top of working full-time night shift in the unit and attending school here, I am the proud mama of four (!) beautiful children. Jianna is 14 and has wanted to go to med school for as long as I can remember. David is 11 and lives for video games. Daniel is my precocious 4 year old that loves trouble. Juliette will be 2 next month and is really starting to come into her own. They definitely keep me busy!

Hello my name is Ryan Duffy. I live in Bucks County PA and have been an RN since 2012. I believe I took a research class during my first undergrad back in the early 2000’s but it has been at least 15 years since then. I am excited to start this course and begin the second quartered of my nurse practitioner program at Drexel. I do not have any concerns at this time and I am looking forward to learning about different types of research and how they relate to the nursing profession. Currently I work in a medical intensive care unit in Philadelphia. I have been there for a little over three years and really enjoy the fast-paced environment as well as all the opportunities I have had to learn from my fellows and attendings. Prior to that I worked in an emergency room which was an awesome experience. My wife and I have two small children, a son who just turned two and a daughter that is about to turn six months old. We also have a golden retriever named Tucker.

Hi everyone and welcome to our course! I live in Sarasota, Florida--where the snowbirds have just landed! My clinical background is trauma and emergency nursing. I am currently an Administrative Director of Emergency Services as well as the President of the American Board of Nursing Specialties. In my spare time I enjoy running, cycling, and taking trips in our RV to find cooler temperatures. I am originally from Canada and truly miss the seasons. I have three Tibetan Mastiffs--the smallest weighing 130 lbs and the other two are 165 lbs. I love nursing research. Many of my professors in Canada were pioneers in nursing research and encouraged a need for asking "why"? Fun facts--I have lived in Auckland, New Zealand and had a life-changing trip to the Sultanate of Oman where I saw outpost hospitals treating patients with tetanus. Here's a picture of my three "TMs" (Mr. Biggles, Lulu, and Gurkha)

Hello! My name is Autumn Prescott. I live in Manassas, Virginia which is about 20 miles west of D.C. I have been a nurse for almost 12 years, with the majority of my experience in pediatric oncology, PICU, and NICU. I am currently working in pediatric hematology/oncology and work full-time night shift. I took a research course in undergrad, however that was about 13 years ago. I am looking forward to reviewing the various types of research methods and learning how to analyze nursing research to apply it to my practice. I do not have any concerns about the course, other than managing my time! In addition to working full-time night shift and this program, I am a mom of three. My youngest just turned 3, and my other two children are 6 and 8. The kids keep me busy with guitar lessons, soccer, and youth group- and my greatest joy is watching them play and learn new things :)

Hello everyone! My name is Kayla Paul. I currently live in Mount Bethel, Pennsylvania. I work as a nurse at a hospital in Morristown on a cardiothoracic surgical/telemetry unit. I have been truly blessed that my first job was on such a wonderful floor with great people. I have been working there for 4 years and continue to learn and grow as a nurse everyday. I obtained my BSN at Drexel in 2017 and decided that I was not done taking advantage of all the learning opportunities that the nursing profession has to offer. I am currently enrolled in the MSN/Family Nurse Practitioner program. I truly do not know what I would like to do with the degree upon graduation just knew it was the right timing to enroll back to school. I have taken a research class before but I suspect to learn a lot more within this class and look forward to. I do not have any concerns about this class just yet. Just taking the time right now to familiarize myself to the material. In my free time when I am not working I like to go on hikes with my two pups. The attached picture is of my golden doodle, Oliver. I look forward to working with all of you!

I work nights, so many of my posts may be posted very early in the morning. My sleep schedule can be a little wacky at times. I am enrolled in the Family NP program and hope to continue working in the cardiac field. On my days off I am usually working out or shopping. Target is one of favorite stores. I recently just bought a condo, so I have been putting all my energy into that. I have two dogs, one is 16 and still runs around like a puppy and the other is 8. I took a research class in undergrad, however I do not really remember much, but I'm sure it will come back to me. As of right now I do not have any concerns about this class. This is me with my best friends daughter, Leila. She just recently turned 5 and is the cutest and funniest little girl.

Hi, everyone! My name is Rebecca Cox. I live in Bel Air, MD, but I'm originally from Tennessee. I graduated from East Tennessee State University in 2007 and then my husband's job brought us to his home state of Maryland right after graduation. My first three years as a nurse were spent at the Johns Hopkins Regional Burn Center. After having my first child I left nights, weekends, and 12-hour shifts to work at Medstar Good Samaritan's Wound Healing Center. I've been there over eight years and I love my job. I loved learning about wound care in school and I've been blessed to work in the field since graduation. I have three children now--ages almost 9, 6, and almost 4. After losing both of my boxers last year, we just adopted a great dane puppy so we are quite busy with the potty training and puppy biting. I did have a nursing research and theory class in undergrad, but honestly, that was over 10 years ago, and I only really remember learning the nursing theories in the class (Watson, etc). My concerns for the class are keeping up reading load as it seems to be more than the classes I've taken so far and winter break spoiled me! I'm interested to see how this class helps me to recognize valid research that can be used in clinical practice.

Hi Everyone! My name is Hannah Marquiss and I live in Ashburn, Virginia with my husband, 2 stepsons (twin 5 year olds), and our pup Bella. I love spending time outdoors hiking/camping, playing sports, and horseback riding. I currently work in a Cardiac Surgery ICU as a nurse part time and as an Ecmo Specialist for both adults and pediatrics full time. I am currently enrolled in the MSN Adult Acute Care NP program. I took a research class for undergrad, but like many of us, that was about 15 years ago. My only concerns are time management for the necessary reading, and the fact that in my mind I have been more clinically focused and not research oriented in my career. I look forward to working with you all and learning a good foundation in research methods that will improve my practice in the future.

I would like to learn how I will be able to incorporate research in to my practice in order to provide the best care for my patients. I have been a nurse for 14 years and will graduate as a pediatric primary care NP in June 2021.

Hello everyone,

My name is Adwoa Ansu-Anin. I live in Arlington, Virginia with my husband and 3 boys, ages 10,9, and 3. I obtained my undergraduate degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. I’ve been working as a nurse for the past 14 years and my background has been mostly acute care. I currently work night shift at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington D.C. on the telemetry unit This is my fourth quarter at Drexel University and I’m enrolled in the MSN program with a focus in quality, patient safety and risk management. I enjoy working out in the parks with a group of moms called the Stroller Strong Moms, watching my boys play soccer, and when I can find the time, I enjoy taking naps.

I took a research course during my BSN program however I don’t recall a thing! The start of every class can be overwhelming and this class is no different for me. My biggest concern is that content from research does not come easily to me so I know I have to put in a lot of work and dedication. I just returned from a two-week vacation to Ghana, West Africa, I’m well rested and ready to put in some hard work for this class. I appreciate the role research has played in nursing, and in healthcare so my goal is that I will know the different types of research, understand research terminology, and understand how researchers reached a conclusion so I can

apply it more effectively in my professional practice.

Best of luck to all of us these next 10 weeks and I’m looking forward to a great class discussion.

Hello Everyone- My name is Stephanie Schuyler and I live in Northeast PA in the suburbs of Philly. I was born and raised in Philadelphia. I currently work in the Medical ICU. I love my shifts in critical care and I look forward to one day becoming an NP in critical care.
I took a research course previously in my undergraduate studies. Admittedly, I was intimidated at that time with research and understanding all of the nuances. I think I have horrors of my undergraduate course that the terminology of research studies is just beyond my comprehension.

I hope that taking this course I will be able to truly interpret studies. I currently read the abstract, introduction and skip to the conclusion or the discussion to get my information. I always say that you can find research for just about any theory. And while that might be true, interpreting that research could be influential in using that information for clinical practice.

I am a Momma of three kiddos. My middle kiddo, Benjamin, just got a Cochlear Implant and we are actively teaching him how to hear! He is not so certain about the hearing world in this photo!

Hi everyone! My name is Anna Wallace. I’m 29 years old, married with one beautiful 8 month old daughter and have one rather larger canine. We live in Wilmington, Delaware. For those not local, it’s a VERY small city in a VERY small state about 45 minutes south of Philadelphia. I have taken research previously in my undergrad at University of Delaware but of course it was very basic. I’m a little weary about a master’s level course because let’s face it- everyone cringes a little when they hear the word “research”. But, looking at the course shell and seeing that many of you have the same hesitations, I’m pretty optimistic about this quarter. I hope to learn how to decipher studies and determine the level of legitimacy to incorporate the newest and best practices in my patient care. I would love to upload a photo for you all however I refuse to give up my ancient laptop from undergrad which is not working with this site so I’m currently on an iPad that my husband gave me for my birthday, which I hardly use. What can I say? I’m a creature of habit!

Hello everyone!! My name is Brooke Macuch. I live in Northeast Pa in a town called Drums. I live with my 3 children and my husband of 10 years. I have been a nurse for 12 years working mostly in ICU. I currently work in Electrophysiology and love what I a doing. I took a nursing research class during my BSN journey. Research is something I am interested in because research is very important to the nursing field. I hope to learn even more about how it impacts the medical field. Also the opportunities we as nurses have in a research position. One thing that concerns me is the same thing that worries me in every class in APA format. I look forward to learning with you all!
