After the destruction of Hannibal, Roman senators became suspicious. As time went by, many Romans had begun to intervene with people from Carthage due to the peace treaty between the two. Carthage then became a large competitor for trade against Rome.
With Carthage becoming strong, the Romans had to take them out because they needed to make sure they weren't going to take over.

Carthage knew they had no chance of winning. So they tried to make the Romans happy and offered them 300 children from the wealthiest families as hostages. Rome still declared war on them in 149 B.C. Romans sent 80,000 troops to surround the city of Carthage. Carthage was very weak but fought for 3 years. As time went by the people inside the city died of starvation.

50,000 people were sold into slavery and the city was burned for 17 days. The Romans took all remaining territories of Carthage and the Senate decreed that no one should ever live there again. To ensure this, the Romans poured salt all over the land so that the earth would dry up and make farming impossible. A city without farms cannot feed it's people.

It was a brief conflict, some people believe it wasn't even a war. Carthage recovered economically. It was no longer a empire but could still trade. As time went on they kept doing good.
