This theme matters to the crucible because it shows how much deception there is among the characters. In a normal society, there is deception and honesty all around us. In the crucible, you can detect it right away, and you can really notice whats going on. In the real world, its harder to detect because people go to extreme lengths in order to hide it. All the text is saying in the story is everyone lies to everyone, but you can only survive if you're the sneakiest liar, like Abigail.

Reasoning for this quote

This quote supports the idea that in the crucible there is more deception then honesty going on because at court they are attempting to find the guilty person of witchcraft however, there are so many people lying that only one side of the problem is being looked at. In the first quote proctor is yelling at Mary and telling her "God damns liars," and is trying to make her tell the truth. But then Danforth is yelling at her and trying to get her to confess to witchcraft so she doesn't hang. Danforth believes that Mary is truly guilty because of Abby. The reason why is because during all of this Abby is making a scene and trying to make Mary look as if she is conjuring with the devil. Abby and the other girls act as if there is a evil "bird" above them. There is so much going on in the court room that the court is oblivious to the fact that they are accusing the wrong person. This passage shows how deception overcomes honesty because first of all Danforth is scared and believes Abby and the other girls lie. He then pays no attention to proctor and Mary whom are the honest ones and doesn't even consider the accuser, Abby, as being guilty. Deception blinds people. All of the court is being deceived and John is overlooked due to the act of Abby.
Second quotes reasoning-
This next quote really ties into the idea that there is more deception then honesty because Proctor says, "Is the accuser always holy now?" This statement as he goes on to explain shows how the court is only looking at one side of the story. Which in this case there was so much fear that people created lies to survive which created deception and if there was someone who came forward to tell the truth no one believed them and they were sentenced to hang because they where the ones on the opposing side This quote also explains how these witch trial are just a set up for someone who just wants revenge. "A common vengeance writes the law," Proctor is warning and telling the court that a person is behind all of this and he is trying to shed light but they don't believe him. There are to many deceptive people that no one knows the truth and people being scared causes people like Danforth to react and try to settle the people and appease them even if it means killing innocent people. Danforth has a hard time detecting the deception because the people where really sneaky and so many where lying to save there skins.

During the movie and the story, the weather and the atmosphere of The Crucible is usually grim and dark. You never see any happy clouds, no sun, no friendly chatter. There's always dark skies, rain, and quietness. This sets the scene for what people think about when they hear the word liar. Usually in kids shows, it's always happy, and cheerful, and nobody lies, and there's always a hero. In the crucible, there's no hero, and nobody has told the truth.

The poppet is one symbol in The Crucible, because it showed how Abigail used others and objects to frame people for witchcraft. She purposely lied so that she could frame Elizabeth and steal John Procter. The yellow bird in the story, is representing human spirits, that are watching over everyone. Abigail pretends to see these "spirits" and tries to change the view of Mary Warren in the courtroom. With Abigail claiming that Mary is conjuring spirits, is a lie, and this is mainly how the birds are represented in the story.

In both quotes there is a lot of tension and arguing between the court and Proctor. Proctor is trying to tell them about Abby and trying to open their eyes but they won't believe him. In the first quote People reading it I think will take pity on Mary for she is trying to be honest but she has Danforth and Proctor yelling at her, Abby and the girls acting like she is the devil, and shes scared because if she doesn't say the right thing she could be hung. Also some might think that Danforth is being very pushy and rude to Mary. Danforth is like threatening her. This passage is a very irritating part in the story for readers because they know that Abby is lying and the court is not being fair to the accused. Then in the second passage Proctor speaks out and tells the court how they are not looking at the whole picture and being very bias. This is a very powerful point for the court starts to gain some evidence about how Abby has pursued John Proctor. This is the point in the story when things start to get good and lies start to come forward. Overall, these two passages are very powerful parts of the book, and many emotions are portrayed through these lines such as anger, irritation, confusion, and determination. Fear and Deception didn't only occur in the crucible but in real life events which Miller, the author, compared the crucible to. In Washington when people where being convicted of witchery many deceiving things where happening. The courts would pick a target or someone who was in their way and ruin there life. The only way for them to not be jailed or fired was to confess publicly. They made the people believe that these innocent people where truly bad and black-listed them so everyone knew who they where. These poor people would live with a terrible reputation the rest of their life. Also McCarthyism rose up and this was biased off of a person. He was a senator and he created lists of all the suspected people of conjuring with the devil in the government. People loved him, for he made himself look so good and like a protector, however he was deceiving them and slowly picking off his enemies with unfair trials. These people that where convicted where done so with no evidence but just suspicion. However, eventually his reign fell. Both of these events in history have to deal with someones hatred and revenge. They want someone out of there way so they can get what they want. They manipulate people and stories creating a lot of confusion and terror. So many people where deceived in both of these story's from Abby, McCarthy, and even the court. Which is suppose to be protecting you and bring justice. However, they where deceived as well, believing those little lies. There is little honesty in each of these story's and sometimes it seems as if there is none. Then when there is honesty its so hard for that person because no one believes them and the people are usually against them and don't even want to hear what they have to say. Even though it might be hard sometimes to stand out when everyone else is against you, you must for it is the right thing to do, no matter what the consequences.

In the first quote there is a lot of yelling between Proctor and Danforth which is directed at Mary. The Author has used "God damns all liars," for proctors line each time which comes across to the audience that Proctor is kind of demanding Mary to tell the truth and he is threatening her that if she doesn't she will not be forgiven and sent to hell. Proctor is so desperate in these passages for he wants to save his wife. In this same passage Mary doesn't say anything but mutters little nothings under her breath, this disposition of Mary suggests that she is very timid, shy, nervous, and scared. She has so many people yelling at her. The other person whom is yelling is Danforth. He starts out asking questions and slowly get more mad for she is not answering him. He doesn't want her to hang but if she won't say anything she will for sure. So he says, "Do you know who I am?" in this statement he is using his position and rank in authority to try and coax her to admit to seeing the devil and making a compact. The tone of this passage is very serious and intense. John is trying to get Mary to tell the truth and threatening her, but so is Danforth except he wants her to admit to doing witchcraft. He uses his authority. The tone overall very stressful. There is just so much happening in the room from people being scared, angry, confused, and most of all deceptive. Then in the next quote it really is just Proctor talking. Hale tries to convince Proctor that everything will be fine if Mary is truly innocent. This causes Proctor to go off on a rant. Proctor uses a lot of references from religion. Saying things such as being holy, clean, God, and Kingdom. He is questioning their religious morals and beliefs. He also uses the word Vengeance a lot. The author did this to make sure that people knew this entire scheme was Abby's fault for she wanted to be with Proctor. Plus, Vengeance is a very strong word used to describe the revenge and hatred in the town. Then he also uses Children in his speech and innocence, for children are innocent and naive of the world. However, in this paragraph he is saying they are crazy which he references to Abby and the girls for they are liars. Children should not lie but respect others. The tone is very angry, Proctor cut off Hale and went off on a rant. He brings up some very powerful points such as, "Is the accuser always holy now?", and, "Vengeance writes the law!" He is sick of the way this town and court are running. He is saying that there is no justice with the court and he is very mad with Hale for still defending the Court for they are very unfair. In both of these passages there is a lot of anger and confusion. However, most of all there is so much deception and I think it has blinded some people like Hale. The Court is unfair and unjust.
