On New Years Eve, Colombians wear yellow underwear. Yellow underwear is worn by Colombians on New Years Eve because it attracts love and happiness the following year. Quemar el Ano Viejo “ burn the old year away” is another New Years tradition that is also unusual. Colombians will make life size scarecrows or dolls and dress them with their old clothes. Then at midnight they burn the scarecrow or doll to chase all the negativity from the previous year away. Music expressions found in Colombian music have a mixture of Amerindian, African, and European (especially Spanish) influences, as well as more modern American.
