         <description><![CDATA[<div>Intellectual disability is a term used to describe a person with limited cognitive functions, including self-care. <br><br>Examples of Intellectual Disabilities: <br>- Fragile X Syndrome: Genetic, affects development, affects behavior and ability to learn.<br>- Down Syndrome: cognitive and physical symptoms, extra copy or part of a copy of chromosome 21.<br>- Autism: Affects social interactions, communications and how a person learns. <br><br>(<em>What is intellectual disability?</em> 2023)</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1900: Terms such as "imbecile" and "mental deficiency" are accepted and used to describe those with Intellectual Disabilities<br><br>1904: First textbook about ID is developed by Martin Barr called Mental Defectives.<br><br>1907: Indiana becomes first state to pass involuntary sterilzation laws to prevent those with ID from having children in state institutions.<br><br>1971: Court case in Pennsylvania supports the right of all children with ID to have a public education. <br><br>1990: Americans with Disabilities act is passed.<br><br>(<em>Story of intellectual disability timeline - pa waiting list campaign</em>)</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>There are a few places in Michigan that support those with intellectual disabilities.<br><br>One is The Arc, a company that advocates, provides resources and helps place those with intellectual disabilities in homes.&nbsp;<br><br>Recipient Rights in each county also protect the rights of those in placements such as AFC homes to ensure that they are protected where they live!</div>]]></description>
