An analysis of the antecedents – behavior – consequences (ABCs) in a specific situation is necessary for understanding and changing behavior. The A or antecedents in a given situation refer to specific events or stimuli that occur prior to the behavior and may control that behavior. For example, when you see a prompt or sign above the light switch to “Please turn off lights” you are more likely to act accordingly. Brothers, Krantz, and McClannahan (1994) found that office paper was recycled more when the bin was placed in close proximity to participants in an office compared to when it was in a central location. Others in our environment can also influence our behavior. Winett et al. (1982) demonstrated that modeling and daily feedback increased residential electricity conservation.

The desired behavior in this analysis is typically monitored and graphed to increase attention to it. The individual may be taught to engage in behaviors that they previously did not (e.g., composting) or to monitor their own behavior to increase its likelihood. Desrochers and Moster, 2017) taught students to set energy goals (e.g., turning off lights in rooms), monitor their progress, and provide positive consequences when the desired behavior occurs. The response effort can also be manipulated. Recycling bins can be placed next to the garbage bin, making it more convenient to recycle than not (Brothers et al., 1994; Ludwig et al., 1998). In some cases, an undesired behavior could be made more difficult to perform to lessen its likelihood of occurrence. Van Houten et al. (1981) experimentally demonstrated that people’s use of an elevator could be decreased by extending the time interval between their pressing the elevator button and the arrival of the elevator.

Consequences for behavior have received much research attention and so we can clearly say that providing desired items and feedback can influence behavior. Harmful or beneficial environmental behaviors may occur due to the consequences provided for them.

One last important factor is motivation which refers to temporary conditions that can alter the effectiveness of a reinforcer. For example, if there is a period of time that the individual went without that reinforcer, that condition may increase the desirability of that consequence. Not having a favorite fruit for a long time since the last season may increase the desirability of that fruit and increase the likelihood that someone will buy it out of season when it must be transported long distances and have a heavy CO2 cost associated with it. Other examples is the personal experience of a weather extreme event may increase the individual engaging in pro-environmental behaviors (Tang & Choi, 2022), and the dirtiness of item may impact the likelihood of someone recycling it (Donnelly et al., 2023).

References

Ajzen, I.

4. Información sobre el tema de sostenibilidad

a. Importancia (2)

b.

“A sustainable world means working together to create prosperity for all.” -- Jacqueline Novogratz

For the projects in this module, we have a shared purpose to plan to make the world a better place by creating economic, social, and environmental balance to promote a better future for our children and their children and so on as well as for all creatures and life on Earth.

Dr. Solidad and I structured this assignment as groupwork because there are many skills that you can learn if you don’t already engage in them, some of which include:

Groups tend to come up with better ideas than just one person (Desrochers et al., 2007).

More complex problems with more effort can be tackled by groups with diverse knowledge and skills than individually (Hüffmeier et al., 2022).

Communication, negotiation, listening, conflict resolution, leadership and time management skills are fostered in groupwork and these soft skills are valued by employers (Dissanayeke et al., 2024; DLS, 2025).

You learn active listening, respect for divergent opinions, cultural competence, leadership, empathy in groups (Vermette & Kline 2017).

Collaborative learning sharpens your critical thinking, problem solving, and project management skills (Ez-Zaouia & Carrillo, 2024).

Please work together in your group with give and take and facilitate your partners’ learning and success. Leave no student behind. If you need assistance, contact your instructor for ideas on how to make this work.

No dejes a ningún estudiante atrás.

References

Department of Labor Statistics (DLS; 2025). Skills Data : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

Desrochers, M.
