Gary Bowling's House of Art is such a unique experience. It was created in an abandoned really old high school and is filled exclusively with art from local artists who have impacted our community. Truth be told, this gallery is filled with life, color, and personality, but none of that is represented on the business cart. It is a very simple font and only uses basic neutral colors. While I am very aware that the actual image of the stone is blurry, I was trying to capture the very very very small inscription on the inside of the band. When I was ordering my class ring, they asked if I wanted my name on the inside of the band, and I thought; "Why not?" They did not inform me that it would be so small that it is nearly impossible to read. I completely forgot the my name was even on it until I went to clean off what I thought was dirt and realized it was lettering. This is the Chili's parking sign located at the on campus Chili's on Cary St. I definitely respect the creativity and the attempt to try and make the logo fun and originally. That being said, I have always had an issue reading the logo as "Chili's" instead of "Chili's" and I can't be the only one. This Restaurant is home of my favorite fried pickles. I love walking inside this bathroom because all of the writing gives so much energy and tells so many stories. Most of the things written on the wall I can only imagine were not created with a sober mind, but thinking about those circumstances, I can only respect the typographic quality of everything written. I feel like most individuals are familiar with the concept of an Open sign. The business opens for the day, flips the switch to the neon sign, and the word "Open" begins to flash in bright colors and in different flashing patterns. As I looked over at the window, only the letters O-P-E were lit up. It made me think that in the split second this sign has to draw a viewers attention at the mercy of their glance, If an open sign is only partially lit up, awaiting the luminance of the N, it will most likely drive customers away. So, while things that are bright and flashy may seem like an eye-catching scheme to draw people in, if the whole word doesn't flash as a unit, then it may appear as if you bought a cheap sign and some of the letters went out. I've always loved it for so many reasons. Music is a big part of my family, and both my sister and I have been playing piano for as long as I can remember. This is the lid of the box they came in. I love this logo. It is so simple... actually, I think simply elegant is a better way of putting it. The typeface is very thin, but it does not feel stagnant or stiff. The way the serifs flow into the stems, spines and the rest of the typographic anatomy isn't harsh like it is within a typewriter typeface. This small detail adds to the gracefulness of the logo. In terms of business, people always say that if people are asking question then it means you have their attention. I could read this sign from 10 minutes down the road, that might be a slight exaggeration but you get the point. It might be beneficial to passing by viewers if Pep Boys added addition information, maybe under the main sign. I have no clue what these events are and I don't really think they would be my scene, but I have to admit that I'm impressed with the consistency of the emotion and message throughout all of the flyers. They all draw attention in in separate ways. The flyer on the top left is very well pieced together, however I will not it feels a bit crowded. It has illustrations that perfectly emphasize the meaning and emotion of the typefaces chosen to display the text. There are also a lot of different typefaces being used, maybe some consistency in that area would improve the flyer, but the inconsistency and clutter is also creating a chaotic feeling which might be the goal of the creator. The green flyer stands out very nicely against the prominently black and white background. But I do wish there was more illustration and character within the compositional design. The bottom right corner flyer has a nice, beautifully done illustration, but some of its text is unreadable due to the color of the text being white with only a thin black outline to separate it from the white negative space of the flyer. I went into the CVS on Cary to get a bottle of water. Unfortunately, if I walk into a store to only buy one thing, I usually walk away with more. This time walking in I walked by the makeup isle and remembered that I am running low on mascara. This one caught my eye honestly because I thought it was the prettiest. In my opinion, I feel like that means the marketing team is doing their job right. The typography on this project has many tricks that systematically draw attention. First, there is a good use of hierarchy that emphasizes what the consumer will take away. Second, they manipulated the anatomy of the letters in a way that is still readable but exaggerates the message behind the name. One note I will make is that I'm not sure it was a wise decision to break up the word "sensational." The "GRTC pulse" logo stood out to me because it managed to both depict representation of a heartbeat as well as the outline of the city buildings. This design, to me, says that the adventures you find while on the GRTC pulse is what being in the city is all about, its adventure that gets your heart beating and keeps your "pulse" alive, adventure that changes the way you see that city as a whole. My friend Gabi, brought this game. In most cases, when you see game packaging, it is covered in characters, colors, and text. This stood out to me because of how plain it is. It's not really a game you play for entertainment. It's a game that asks hard questions and brings people closer together after really starting to understand each other and their struggles. A lot of time, logos and typography are used to convey meaning and sometimes exaggerate what things really are. If this box were covered in anything besides what it is, people would expect the game to be something that it's not and frankly, it wouldn't do what it's supposed to do, which is exactly what it says, turning strangers to family. One tool I often forget about typography is the fact that sometimes less is more. When I first analyzed it. I thought, "The City of Richmond should be in black so that it'll stand out more." But then I realized that isn't what was supposed supposed to stand out. The border of the barcode and the contents of the barcode are in fact black and white, which creates a nice contrast and draws more attention. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post my own typographic work on here, but it is kind of out in the wild, and it's all I have been working on for little while so I haven't been too "out in the wild." Anyways, overall the piece meets the criteria that was asked of it. Each letter has its own character yet it remains cohesive and it is both readable and legible, which is very important. I hate the way I did "Greetings from." It doesn't match the tilt Of Bluefield and the width of each letter is not consistent. I also wish I would have scaled down "Bluefield" so that the red shadow doesn't pass the edge of the canvas. I had passed by this place many times before and it definitely wasn't what I had expected based on the logo alone. Seeing this logo I was expecting more of a bar or pub than a fancy restaurant with a dress code. I feel as if there is a bit of a disconnect between the logo and what is actual inside the restaurant. The logo overall is very strong. It's a warm color pallet that looks fun and interesting. The next is composed nicely into a box which looks very thought out and is very pleasing to the eye. I absolutely love this design. The way the colors of the leaves overlap and create new colors is so well done. The tones used are the perfect mix of tasteful, fun, and professional. They typeface is simple, yet it still stands out against the background illustration, as a matter of fact it blends together while also standing out which I also find to be very impressive.
