In the Giver the apple symbolizes the utopia and how everyone must me the same and there isn't much difference. The apple shows this because Jonas noticed the apple was different. When he noticed this he took it home and analyzed it convincing himself it was just a regular apple. In the utopia it is rude to call out someone's difference but it is still there and it will not go away. It is just ignored.

In the Sneetches' world if you had a star on your belly you were accepted and if you didn't you were ignored and thought less of. In the Giver if you were to bring up differences it is considered rude but in the Sneetches world it's just a part of life. In the end the Sneetches realize that what makes them different is good and they should accept themselves as well as others. In the Giver being the same and thought of the same is a good thing and is normal. You shouldn't really be different in the utopia.

the utopia forbids change and love. The change Jonas has discovered is this. The pills prevent the feelings of love. Everyone gets assigned to a husband/wife and isn't allowed to feel attracted. Therefore, the pills help and also prevent PUBERTY also known as the STIRRINGS.

The Receiver's House is different from other houses in the community since his job has the highest honor. In the Receiver's house the tables are different. Instead of the table legs being straight like the rest of the community they are curved. Also the Receiver has shelves of books on his walls. In the other houses there are only three books which contain the rules, a dictionary, and a community volume.

When Jonas says this quote he means that he thought his utopia was only consisting of the people in it and they don't have to worry about other life problems. A problem free utopia is what Jonas has been living in all this time. This is not a healthy way to live because if the utopia falls apart no one will really know what to do as they weren't exposed to real problems. For example, the citizens in the utopia aren't allowed to truly love someone on their own. They must take pills in order to prevent falling in love or getting their heart broken.

Jonas was surprised the Giver turned off the speaker and locked the door because in the utopia you don't have the ability to do so. In the utopia doors may be closed but can't be locked. When Jason first went to the Giver's house the door was locked and he was surprised because all the doors in the utopia are unlocked. Jonas was also surprised when the Giver turned of the sound to the speaker because in the utopia there are no switches on the speakers so you really have no power over them. This reveals that the citizens of the utopia are controlled and have limitations as to what they can and not do.

Jonas receives the memory of snow, sunshine, and sunburn. In the snow memory there was white feathery snow all around.. There were hills, a sled, and runners. This has never been experienced in the utopia because the snow causes difficulties to grow things all year round. In the memory of sunshine Jonas found it comfortable and pleasurable. The sunshine came from the sky instead of climate control. Lastly, Jonas received the memory of sunburn. Jonas begged the Giver to give him this memory to signify trust. The sunburn hurt and wasn't what he has felt before. Since the community controls the climate the sun is not harmful to the citizens.
