         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1972 Jordan was elected to represent Texas Eighteenth District in the House of Representatives. Jordan took the primary 80 percent of the vote. She was the first black state senator since 1883. Her seating preference as well as her loyalty to the Texas delegation agitated fellow CBC members , but both were consistent with Jordan's  model of seeking congressional influence. She also gained the respect of her thirty white male colleges. In 1979 she became a professor at Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the university of Texas at Austin.</div>]]></description>
