This psychological thriller written by Freida Mcfadden is based on the life of Millie, who is an ex convict looking for a new life. The story is set in Long Island, where Millie after a few attempts gets a job as a live-in housemaid for the affluent Winchester family, Nina, her husband Andrew and their daughter Cecilia. The book reaches its climax when Millie has to face unexpected danger after discovering disturbing truths about Andrew and it ends dramatically.

The plot is totally convincing and the characters are very well drawn. The Housemaid is a real page-turner from start to finish, therefore if you are a thriller fan I couldn´t recommend it more.

Roberto Reissmann Pereira c1.1-3

Trajan’s Trilogy is a powerful, gripping and moving biography about Trajan, one of the most well-known and beloved emperors of the Roman Empire. The author, Santiago Posteguillo, not only brings to life this historical figure from the 1st century A.D., but he also depicts a kaleidoscopic and detailed picture of the history, society and mindset of ancient Rome.

The Murders of the Emperor, Circus Máximus and The Lost Legion are the three titles of this trilogy. They present the thrilling story of Marco Ulpio Trajanus, from his childhood in Baetica (Andalucía) and his military career to become a legatus, the highest military rank, to the laurels of the empire and his political intelligence and achievements for the Glory of Rome.

Santiago Posteguillo describes the successful leader but also the man, with his flaws, joys and sorrows. Therefore, the character is very well drawn and readers can feel complete sympathy for him.

The fast-moving narrative structure <s>make</s> makes the trilogy a page-turner story. It constantly shifts from the narrative present in the 1st century to past periods of the history of Rome; from the perspective of Roman soldiers to the point of view of the Barbarian enemies… However, the author <s>keep </s>keeps the reader in track due to the extraordinary use of small narrative cells, connected by useful indications about time and place.

What I liked the most was the excellent documentation of facts, events and vocabulary and also the poetic prose of the character’s dialogues, which <s>sound</s> sounds<s> </s>antique but perfectly <s>understanding </s>understandable for a 21st century reader.

I definitely recommend that you add this book to your collection. It will change your point of view about the Roman Empire, yet also the fondness for the people that lived in this period of history.

Derry Girls-Laura Orge

Derry Girls is a comedy series based on the creator’s teenage years, whose plot centres on a group of chaotic teen girls (plus a teen boy) living in Northern Ireland, specifically in Derry, in the last years of the Troubles. The story begins when the friend group meets the group of rthe British male cousin of one of them, who becomes their friend right away despite their cultural differences. However, the key to its success <s>it</s> is the exploration of the difficulties of coming of age and growing up ,that are laugh-out-loud funny.

During its three season, Derry Girls tackles the high school years of the main characters, each one with their own issues and story lines, although the plot focuses more on one of them making her the main character<s>, which . </s>This choice<s> </s>makes sense taking in consideration she is the one loosely based on the creator of the series.

The characters are relatable, though a little bit exaggerated for comic purposes, but both the main and secondary characters are the heart of the series, though they are all very flawed, but it is what makes them realistic and hilarious. What I liked most about the story <s>it</s> was the great depiction of female friendship and the family dynamic showcased through the main character’s family, whose messiness is on a whole different level and also an absolute delight to watch.

Besides, many watchers appreciate that ,despite the fact of the Troubles not being the main focus /although the Troubles are not the main focus, (it sounds more natural using although), it gets to make an insightful commentary about the political issues in a very hopeful and positive way without <s>running away of the controversies.</s> avoiding controversy

Overall, not only can I not recommend Derry Girls highly enough but also is at the top of my list.

This documentary centres around the figure of Daniel Johnston, an <s>american American</s> singer who was not that known to the general public but was the favourite artist of some of the most influential artists of the 80’s.
The documentary starts with his early childhood, how growing up in a heavily religious family influenced him and his music. How later he started composing and recording cassettes in his garage, which he did manually, so every cassette was unique. He didn’t copy them, he recorded every one of them individually and handed them to other artists, who, upon listening to his music, were impressed with it.
However, Daniel suffered from bipolar disorder and other mental health issues, bringing to his life multiple incidents, some of which led him to be hospitalized in a mental health institution.
In this documentary, we get an insight into Daniel Johnston’s life, his work, and his legacy. Sometimes funny, sometimes tragic, it shines a light on one of the most misunderstood artists of the 80’s. I definitely recommend watching it and listening to some of his songs, they leave no one indifferent.

Ignacio Rodríguez Pereira

Shadow and Bone Review

The fantasy saga I will be reviewing today is called the Shadow and Bone trilogy by Leigh Bardugo. The story takes place in a world where magic exists, it´s called the Small Science, and the few individuals who possess magical abilities are called the grisha. Based on the type of magic they use, whether it´s related to the human body, natural elements, or materials and chemicals, they are classified into three groups. However, after Alina, an orphan from the country of Ravka, survives a dangerous situation, not only does she discover that she is a grisha, but that she is also the only grisha who can manipulate light. The three books focus on Alina´s training and journey to find the three amplifiers that will help her become the most powerful grisha soldier of all times.

The plot manages to be exciting and full of twists that will evoke all kinds of emotions, while being thorough and complex at the same time. For example, when it comes to the political intrigue, it´s written realistically, but in a way that isn´t too heavy going for the reader (which I personally appreciate). Although my favorite character is the Darkling, the leader of the grisha soldiers and Alina´s mentor; all of the characters are so diverse and well drawn: they actually feel human and not stereotypical at all. The same thing happens with the worldbuilding, which is my favorite aspect of this book, because you can tell how much effort the author put into all of the details, such as the map with all of the countries, historical events and figures, different languages, traditions, religions, clothing…

Rarely have I read any fantasy novels as engaging and well-written as these. In fact, I´ve read a lot of this genre after Shadow and Bone but I still haven´t found anything that can captivate me as much, it really stuck with me. That´s why I highly recommend it and I think it´s a must-read for people who are trying to find an original and elaborate concept instead of all the repetitive ones we see in popular books nowadays.

Finally, I would like to conclude by saying that, if you end up reading and enjoying these books, I really encourage you to go further and read the rest, because these are just the first of a whole literary universe called the Grishaverse, with more sagas with different characters and stories, all set in the same world as Shadow and Bone. There´s the Six of Crows duology, the King of Scars duology, some spin-off books with short stories, as well as an adaptation that you can watch on Netflix.

Thanks for listening!

Sara Ramos

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Today I'll be recommending The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

This bestselling* book explores themes such as fame, love, ambition, and identity. It became very popular on the internet a few years ago, especially on social media, which led me to read it, and I don't really know what I expected from the book but it certainly wasn't this.

The story is set in Hollywood during the golden age of cinema. The book tells the story of Evelyn Hugo, a famous and retired actress who decides to tell the truth about her life and her seven marriages. Since she is such a well-known public figure, many people wanted to interview her and discover who her true love really was. However, Evelyn chooses to tell her story to an unknown journalist called Monique Grant, and she says that if she’s not the one interviewing her, then she won't do the interview.

Evelyn was born into a poor family, and from a very young age she had to learn to do whatever was necessary to escape poverty and reach fame. She is often portrayed as glamorous, confident, and very ambitious. She understands how the film industry works and she knows how competitive that world is, and is willing to do anything to succeed. Plus, she is very aware that looks are important in this industry, and she knows how to take advantage of that.

The plot focuses on Evelyn’s rise to fame and the sacrifices she makes to survive in a male-dominated world. Through her conversations with Monique, we slowly discover the personal side of her life, her real feelings, and the cost of her success.

What I really like about this book is its complexity. It is not a simple story with a perfect main character: Evelyn is complex, more likely to be described as morally ambiguous rather than a traditional hero. A bit controversial since many people criticize the character for this, but for me, it just makes her feel more real and human. The characters are well drawn, and I’m not going to spoil anything, but there is an unexpected twist that adds emotional deepness to the story.

Don’t miss it. For me, it’s a recommendation because it doesn’t idealize Hollywood or fame, it shows the cruel truth and the sacrifices people make to achieve success. Also, there's supposed to be a movie based on the book, which was announced like three years ago, but now no one knows anything about it. But if the movie ever comes out and you're interested, I hope you read the book first and enjoy it.

Thank you for listening.

Érika

CIRCE OU O PRACER DO AZUL, BEGOÑA CAAMAÑO

Listening to Isabel´s book recommendations, I have remembered how much Begoña Caamaño surprised me with her first book, Circe ou o pracer do azul.

The author focuses<s> the novel in </s>on or the novel is based on the Odyssey The Odyssey topic and brings us a new point of view about main characters: King Ulysses, Penelope, his wife and Circe, his lover. And Begoña is so convincing than, since I read the book, her version of the characters has become the only possible.

As you know, King Ulysses had left to the Trojan War. The return took him twenty years. Meanwhile Penelope tried <s>herself´s</s> her patience trusting his husband and King. Certainly he would be back sooner or later. During these years she had rejected suitors telling them she would marry <s>after ending to weave a shroud</s> once she finished weaving a shroud to Laertes, <s>the</s> Ithaca old King and Ulysses´ father. But every night she undid what she <s>weaved</s> had woven during the day.

The classic version shows us Penelope like an example of faithfulness and loyalty. But nowadays it seems definitely implausible: a woman who chooses not to manage her life in order to respect the long absence of her partner. Twenty years! It May be romantic but not realistic.

Begoña Caamaño has confronted the patriarchal pattern with cleverness and sensibility, building a refreshing and feminist version. It depicts how friendship<s> </s>can<s> move </s>change/ challenge your expectations and help you <s>to</s> get a better life. Begoña´s boldness reacting to a classic from Greek literature achieves a very riveting novel. Humour flies over this touching and contemporary story. And of course, the end doesn´t disappoint.
