After reading and looking at fall semester discipline data:
What can you take from this presentation that could be applicable in the classroom?
What other information would be helpful to you in looking at discipline in the school and classroom?
What conclusions can you draw from this data and reading “If any”.
What questions do you still have?

It comes down to intergenerational trauma. It was not that long ago, within 1 generation, that people of color were put on a bus to go to a different school in a different part of the city. That’s our students’ parents or grandparents.

It comes down to intergenerational trauma. It wasn’t that long ago, within 1 generation, that black students were out on a bus to go to school in a different part of the county. That’s our students’ parents or grandparents experience. School and the educational system in which we work is a white system. The more we realize that and can empathize that students of color are constantly in a defensive state the better we will be to notice our own inherent biases.

Behavior at school is likely a reflection of basic needs being met at home. Students in low socioeconomic households are more likely to experience trauma and not receive counseling to learn strategies to cope. I agree that single parent families should be considered in this data because that may play a role in the data appearing to be racially based. Less supervision at home sometimes leads to push-back on a authority figures at school. Parents with less education are not as likely to value education and sometimes communicate these views either directly or indirectly to their children. The data may appear this way, but I believe teachers at Owen are fair and not singling out students based on race. Students are all coming from different places and that is likely manifesting in these behaviors at school. It must be looked at in a more holistic way.

1. Since the majority of referrals are coming from the freshmen class and boys, I wonder if it would be constructive to have freshmen teachers gather to share experiences, and discuss all methods of pro-active relationship-building, expectations, referrals, etc.
2. I think this data is a good starting point for disparity, however there are many factors at play. One is how connected income/stress are to the category of race. I think as professionals we should all consider our biases and how they may unconsciously affect our decisions. There are some helpful activities created for staff meetings that focus on low income empathy/awareness.
3. I think to really work on this, staff will have to break into small groups so that we're comfortable discussing the issue, but presenting the data was a great starting point.
