Inspiring Responses from the Two Local Leaders: Similarities and Differences

There are two kinds of leaders: Mr. Brunet displays their leadership skills and concentrates more on what they can do for the team; Mrs. Dellosa, on the other hand, emphasizes that people should take on more responsibility and that leaders should pay closer attention to their people as well as their constituents. Both leaders are responsible for overseeing their subordinates and people. In comparison, Mrs. Dellosa, a former mayor and current councilor have a bigger scope of responsibility. She runs the entire municipality and oversees different agencies and departments, while the content marketing manager has a team that has a specific field and scope of work concerning marketing.

Both leaders brought an emphasis on empathy and seeing the needs. These qualities are possessed by both leaders, and they impart this wisdom to us. Their only difference is the organization. Mr. Brunet is from a company and Mrs. Dellosa is an elected leader of a town.

Group's Collaborative Insights and Reflections

Leadership involves the ability to uplift, motivate, form a vision, respect others, and, of course, lead by example. A leader needs to be honest with themselves about who they are, what they know, and what they can do. We firmly think that effective leaders are created, not born. You can become a successful leader if you have the motivation and willpower. Good leaders are created through an unending process of life lessons, training, and the right education.

A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. –– John C. Maxwell

Because of the help of this collaborative work, we can understand that we can be a leader at a different level with varying leadership styles. Mr. Brunet is an employee "manager" in an English company but he can act like a leader with different and simple tasks. Whilst Mrs. Dellosa was a "mayor" and a politician wherein her leadership has a wider scope in responsibilities than Mr. Brunet.

Mr. Brunet informs us that being a leader entails a wide range of responsibilities and demonstrates the qualities that a leader should possess in order to be better for the people. According to him, being a leader is more about the value you can contribute to the group so that everyone can improve the team's ability to serve the public. As a person with authority, Mrs. Dellosa places a greater emphasis on getting to know the people around them in order to serve them better. They also mentioned that in order to better understand what your constituents need, you should be able to comprehend their perspectives, needs, and what you can do to aid them in performing their duties more effectively.

Leadership is undoubtedly necessary for all aspects of life. The path to success would be through good leadership. On the other hand, ineffective leadership risks failure. As a result, effective leaders are essential to society.

So, we, the students can be leaders as well. Everyone can be a leader, but it all depends on how we act. We can develop leadership abilities such as effective listening, mentoring, guiding, persuading, and resolution of conflicts. We will become a more effective person as a result of these skills. We can acquire skill and experience without asking for any permission. Additionally, no one can prevent us from gaining knowledge and experience in becoming a great leader.

Interviewee:
Dra. Carolina Dellosa
Municipal Councilor / Former Mayor
of the Municipality of Baliuag, Province of Bulacan

[1] Can you tell us something about the company or organization you belong to and your position?

Previously, I became the president of the Zonta Club of International, and then last 2013, I became the Mayor of the Municipality of Baliuag.

[2] What are the roles and duties you have to fulfill in this leadership position?

In the whole municipality, you have to see to it, that you see the needs of the people and also the different departments in the municipal hall that they're doing all their jobs, all the employees of the municipal hall. I see to it that they are all present at the respective desks over the place of work because during the time that I wasn't still the mayor, I sometimes go to the municipal hall to transact some business by paying my resident tax, real estate tax, and during those times, I saw that there are only a few employees.

When I became the mayor, I see to it that, they are all present. I bought a finger scanner machine so that I will know if they are really present or not. And I go to work, I went to work at 8:00 AM exactly before that, before 8:00 AM. After signing all the papers that needed to be signed, I go to the different departments to see that the people are working and they are professional, the people who are trying to do business in each department. I consistently go to the different departments every day to see, that they are doing their work well, that they are nice to the people that they’re talking to, they're respectful, and that I see the needs of the people.

Besides that, I see to it that, I talk to people, especially, since I have so many speaking engagements, I'm very close to the students so I usually visit some of the schools, especially high school ones, to inspire them to study well by the end of their years that they had already finished. They'll have a better job and a better opportunity for their family to have a good life.

[3] What was one mistake that you made as a leader that you can never forget, and what did you learn from this mistake?

Before I became a mayor, I practice OB-GYNE I'm very trusting and very empathic to people. I learned from them that you should not be too trusting of some people. Cause in your position as the mayor, they sometimes. Do something bad that your reputation is also at stake.

[4] Nobody’s perfect, and I believe mistakes are the best teacher. But above that mistake, who inspired you to be a good leader, and how did he/she motivate you to be the exemplary leader that you are today?

The person who inspired me to be a good leader is Engr. Ireneo S. Villangca, he was like a father to me, treats me as his own. He’s the one who persuaded me to join politics. It was never my intention to be involved in politics but being part of it honed my leadership skills.

[5] I am now convinced that having someone to look up to is important for staying motivated to work harder and be the best version of ourselves. As many people also want to be leaders someday, what are your tips for them?

Be empathetic. A leader should empathize with people, and ensure that you're not just staying in a room signing papers. Make efforts to see the needs of your people. Be observant, because sometimes you will also personally experience the problems of your people.

[6] There will always be personal references that people consider when calling someone a leader. With this in mind, what qualities do you believe a person must possess in order to be considered a leader?

When you are a leader, you have to be proactive and present in overseeing your constituents and subordinates. You will not understand profoundly how to strategically govern and act if you are not hands-on to your people. You will not understand how to improve, what gaps to address, and know what problems to solve if you don’t profoundly understand your people and what’s going on below you. Communicate and engage with people. You will learn a lot from them.

[7] I am sure that if a person is dedicated to leadership, he/she also possesses the characteristics you have mentioned. Lastly, in your opinion, I would like to ask if anyone can be a leader and why?

Anyone can be a leader if they have the capacity to be very honest and empathetic. You have the guts to say no and the guts to say yes to gullible people. You must also be strong as a leader; you have to go out of your way to some other places to see the needs of others, especially the marginalized.
