The giver is the one who said this when he was with Jonas. He said it to Jonas because they were talking about how it would be nice to be able to choose things, and Jonas said that it wasn’t fair that he couldn’t choose even certain things, like the color of his tunic. I think the importance of this quote is that Jonas wants his community to be able to make simple choices. Like Gabe as an example.

After days and weeks of training Jonas is still there and in this quote he is at training and talking to the Giver. After they were done talking about choosing, the story skipped to them talking about colors and emotions.

In this community I think it means that Jonas was really thinking about what his life would be like if he could choose things everyday. I think it reveals that he is starting to question his community a little bit.

To me, I think this quote means that making choices is important, and having everything be chosen for you or “not being able to choose at all” would be very boring. Jonas is mad that people can’t see color and therefore can’t know what color of clothes they are wearing. It is being said at jonas’s assignment in the givers room.

It means that the giver is trying to understand jonas’s point of view and that jonas is upset that people can’t see color anymore.

This quote itself doesn’t mean that much to me but the context around the quote is what’s meaningful to me. Without color our world would be much worse i personally think and i think color affects many things we do on a daily basis.

The Giver said this to Jonas. Jonas was ranting about choice and then realized that it didn’t really matter the outcome, but he still wanted the choice. The Giver said this to pretty much sum up what Jonas was saying. He was trying to help Jonas understand the new feelings he got as he gained the memories and acting like a parenting figure again in this way.

Context:
Like I said above, Jonas was ranting about wanting the ability to choose things. Specifically, the ability to choose which color tunic he wanted to wear in the morning. The conversation stemmed from Jonas being upset that he couldn’t keep the colors in his vision and that no one else had the colors either. He said it wasn’t fair. The Giver, like I said, was trying to help Jonas understand his feelings.

Significance:
This quote is a big milestone for Jonas’s character development. It shows he’s starting to understand the major flaws in his community’s way of thinking and running things. It also helps Jonas understand that yes, this way of living is an unfortunately boring life, and yes, colors and choice can be liberating and a very nice thing, but at the same time, there’s a reason the creators of this community chose this the way they did. They wanted to protect people from making the wrong choices. It show just how much Jonas is growing up because of this new information and just how well he’s learning to think for himself.

Connections:
This quote resonated rather well with me. I can totally see where Jonas and the Giver are coming from. Because I totally agree. I even see examples of this everywhere. It’s like a toddler telling his mother, “I do it, Mommy!” even though she’d do the exact same thing, or like someone not wanting to hear another’s advice, but making the same decision anyways. It’s not that what they’d be doing would be different. It’s just that they want to make their own decisions and choices and do things in their lives themselves. I do that. Jonas was complaining to the Giver about being able to pick out a red tunic rather than a blue tunic, but when the Giver puts into perspective that it’s not about what you wear, it’s about the choosing itself is what is important.

2. Jonas is starting to see colors now, but only for short periods of time. This upsets him because if colors are so beautiful then why does the community hide them. He starts going on a rant about being able to choose a blue tunic rather than a red one and he knows it’s not about what he wears, but he couldn’t think of what it was truly about. The Giver then puts it into perspective for him saying it’s the choosing, that’s what is important. For Jonas, it was the choosing that’s important.

3. “It’s the choosing that’s important, isn’t it?” means that it’s not the actually choice you make but having the opportunity to choose for yourself is important. In Jonas’s world choosing for yourself doesn’t even really exist. When Jonas starts getting memories of colors and love he wants the chance to make his own decisions. From this, he wants to propose the freedom to choose to counsel but that will bring up a lot of conflict. All in all this quote reveals that the freedom to choose for ourselves is nothing to take for granted.

4. Choosing is very important freedom we have in this world. We can choose what religion we believe in, where we live, what job we want, etc. All of these things wouldn’t be possible if we didn’t have the freedom to make our own decisions. In some situations I don’t care about the thing we do or what I get but that I got to make the decision.
