Beliefs are intimately tied with educators' sense of self (be it their personal identities or their teaching identities) is consistent across the literature, and, for this

reason, beliefs tend to be resistant to change. In the face of information that challenges their beliefs, such as policy inducement to reform, to modify/include new

populations of students, or to innovate with new technologies, educators tend to feel threatened. 

In reading this portion of the article I am reminded of the many first year teachers I've had the pleasure of working with. The burnout and harsh realities are definitely real. As I consider my future role as a school counselor I am reminded that I can also fall into an unrealistic optimism, and I hope to manage my expectations and go in with my eyes and heart open to whatever may come.

School can be endlessly exasperating for children, and as a school counselor I really hope to ensure that I can be flexible. To meet student where they are at and help them find growth in their way. There are so many molds we can feel forced into within a person's lifespan, my hope is that in counseling my students feel they can be themselves and they can contribute to their growth.

As a future school counselor I hope to always carry this attitude. There is so much that continually changes in a school environment, and I want to change and evolve with it. I hope to always have the heart of a learner, to be adaptable and to grow over the years into a better version of myself. This is what our students deserve.

Through this course, I learned just how vital it is to have self-reflection. I hope to carry this practice on, as a school counselor it will be vital for me to self-reflect so I can correct mistakes and improve upon methods. It is somewhat daunting to consider the reality that there are beliefs I presently hold that could be maladaptive in my work as a school counselor. That there will also be changes and revisions to my beliefs. I hope to remain open-minded and adaptable, and evaluate my own beliefs and it they are serving students effectively. At the core, I know I want to do my best by the students I serve and that is the most important belief. If others need to be adjusted, revised, or deleted I believe I can manage.

It is so easy to navigate life under the assumption that I hold similar beliefs to those around me. Often times I feel conflicts can erupt in the school setting when this assumption occurs, there is a friction and tension you can feel. I hope to be aware and attune to how my beliefs impact my perception and that is also true for those around me. As a future school counselor, I imagine I will be doing a good amount of digging and I hope to consider this element when doing so.

This portion of the article helped me see just how influencial our beliefs can be toward our profession. I can see how as a school counselor I can prioritize certain domains of support differently as it relates to my beliefs. For example, if I believe that student behavior is most important I may prioritize seeing students with behavioral referrals over students with poor grades. Regardless, I hope to be aware of how my beliefs influences my judgement.
