Basketball star Chuck Taylor was a main part of them becoming popular. He would do clinics for basketball and while at the clinics sell many of the shoes. The Chuck Taylor's were named after him as he was the person who got them started. Chuck Taylor's were originally a basketball shoe, until the 1980's when they were wore for about anything.
