In 1945, World War II is drawing to a close in East Prussia, and thousands of refugees
are on a desperate trek toward freedom, almost all of them with something to hide.
Among them are Joana, Emilia, Florian, and Alfred, whose paths converge en route to
the ship that promises salvation, the Wilhelm Gustloff. Forced by circumstance to unite,
the four find their strength, courage, and trust in one another tested with each step
closer toward safety.

Just when it seems freedom is within their grasp, tragedy strikes. Not country,
nor culture, nor status matter as all ten thousand people aboard must fight for the same thing: survival.

This multiple first-person historical novel is suspenseful and keeps the reader gripped as details are being revealed step by step. Slowly, a complete picture emerges and the connections become clear.

Sarah and Anna live in an unstable home. Their dad plays the drums in a band and comes home drunk constantly and their mom took off. Ever since then things haven't been the same. They live in fear not knowing if their dad will come home to them. That fear came true one night when their dad got in a bar fight and was sent to jail. Sarah and Anna have moved around in the foster care system hoping that their dad will pick them up like he's done before. Sarah and Anna are sent to a temporary home with a nice couple who have a son. They have the chance to be adopted but it might be ruined because Anna has autism and makes things difficult for Sarah.

This book shows how the foster system works and the fears that many kids have. It also shows what it means to be a family. If you want to know if they get adopted or not then you have read the book to find out.
