My small group counseling name will be "Inner Peace Warriors" for a group that helps elementary students with anger/big emotions. This group of students will learn self-regulation/coping skills. They will gain knowledge about helpful vs unhelpful thoughts along with the connection that thoughts, feelings and actions have. My group will consist of 4-5 students specifically 4th graders and this group could be co-ed.

Based on my needs assessments that I received back from my teachers, I would interview students individually and make sure that the group members align. This interview would look into the interest, willingness, and readiness to participate. This interview would be more like a conversation between the student and myself in a calm quiet environment. Of course, I would have specific questions ready to ask during these interviews to better help assess whether this student would be fit for the group. Teachers would also give me input on whether certain students do well together or not and a little more background on their personality in a classroom setting. I would use the "Tap-in" process by Rosemarie Smead to help guide me in my screening.

I will have an extra blank sheet, and we would discuss if there were any additional rules/norms that they feel the group should follow.

Stage 1: Group norms and rules will be established in our first session. We will talk about confidentiality and how there is no right or wrong answers, and everyone must try to keep what we talk about in our group to ourselves to ensure that everyone feels safe in our safe space. I would have everyone go around and introduce themselves and let them know that we would do a feelings check-in at the beginning of each session.

Stage 2: In order to have groups members work cohesively and productively is by making sure we go through group rules at the beginning of each session and making sure students know that these must be followed in order to get the most out of our sessions. Students will also do a feelings check-in and have space to talk about how their week has been going based on our topic that we have discussed previously. Students will have a personal journal that is given in the first session, they will write in there if the group has been going well or not going well.

Stage 3: In the second to last session, I will let students know that we have 1 final session left and talk about how we feel about our group ending soon. In our very last session, we will spend some time talking about how the group experience was for each person. I will also give out our post-assessment questionnaires. I will let students know that I will be following up with students individually to talk to them about the ending of the group. In our last session I will reiterate that our group conversations are confidential and are to be kept only in our safe space.

The leadership style I might use for this group is participative leadership. Not only is this considered the best leadership style but in this style members are encouraged to participate, and the leader is offering guidance which I feel is important in our group. Since these students struggle with anger or big emotions this leadership style is helpful in making them feel that they are an important part of the team.

My group is focused on students who are working on anger management and some factors from Yalom's curative factors that might affect the group are Instillation of hope which might lead students to think that the strategies taught might help them not be so angry. Another one is Universality which would help students realize they are not alone in feeling the way they do. Direct Advice might also be used in the group as students might share strategies they use to solve problems in situations.
