The book is about political authority, and channeled George Orwell's hatred of Totalitarianism.

But what is Totalitarianism?
Totalitarianism is a system of governments that are centralized and dictatorial, and requires the complete subservience to the state.
In simpler terms, it means that the Government is attempting to assert total control over the lives of the citizens. It's made to control and direct every aspect of the individuals life through coercion and repression.

The man we meet is called Winston Smith. He is a 39 year old man who works at the Ministry of Truth, where his job is to alter the historical records to match the governmental propaganda.
Winston is portrayed as lanky and frail looking, with a face that is sunk in.



O'Brien
O'Brien gets introduced as Winston's superior at the Ministry, and is apparently a high ranking member of the party. Winston often suspects that O'Brien sympathizes with the resistance.


Syme
He is one of Winston's co-workers at the Ministry, who is working on an dictionary, and is one of the closest thing to a friend that Winston might ever had. He is apparently very intelligent, and is often satisfied with his work. However due to his intelligence, Winston thinks that Syme might disappear because of it.



Big Brother
Big Brother is someone who is always everywhere and always watching, a sort of symbolic for the totalitarian government of Oceania, who was controlled by the party. He is not a real person, but is rather an invention done by the party, who'm functions as the peoples feelings of reverence and fear



Emmanuel Goldstein
Leader of the Brotherhood, which is a resistance formed to work a revolution against the Party. Just like Big Brother, Goldstein is looked at like an invention to trap resistors like Winston.


Julia
She is a young woman who works at the Ministry of Truth, and just like Winston, she despises the Party and the world. Julia's rebellion is based off personal desires, and wishes for freedom to enjoy herself and the existence as she pleases. Julia and Winston gets contacted by the Brotherhood, but she has little interest in the goals they have, but goes along with it to get freedom.


Mr. Charrington
He is an old man who rents Winston a private room, and ends up selling him some antiques that Winston finds interesting. However, Mr. Charrington is revealed later to be a member of the Police (Thought Police?), and has been setting up Winston for arrest from the beginning of their meeting.

Their thoughts are well written, and the feelings are always something the reader is aware of.

Every part of the dialogue is well thought out, and we can clearly read the emotions in the dialogue from the characters. If they are mad, and are having a conversation, you can clearly tell.

Descriptions of their appearance?
If we use an example, such as the description of Winston, we get told he is lanky, skinny, tall and has a face that is clearly well sunken in, either due to loss of sleep or hunger. 
These descriptions paints an easy image for us readers, making us imagine a lanky tall man, who has tired and puffy eyes.

What position does it put the reader in? How might this affect the story? Would the story be different if it was told from the point of view of one of the other characters?  
The entire story is set in some kind of third point view, meaning that we get to hear Winston's thoughts and what he says, without the use of words such as "I said" or "I thought".

How is the setting established? Comment on the language. 
The language and grammar used in the book is very formally written, and sounds much more like a novel than a storytelling from a different person.

What type of tone is created? How does the writer create this tone? How might it affect the reader? 


What is the mood of the story?  
The mood of the story is an uneasy one, you feel kind of on edge while reading, as you know that what Winston is doing might get him in big trouble.

This means that the public does not know who is leading their government, and thus can lead to false propaganda presented by the government.

By not knowing the head of the Government, it can cause trust issues in the public, and can cause a backlash.
The theme of the book was chosen as a warning to the readers, because a regime like that can and will release propaganda that are false, or has information that has been manipulated or changed by governmental officials.
