For me personally, seeing a serial killer in the news evokes very complex emotions. I feel disgusted by what they’ve done, and if I were in the victim’s position, I would feel a lot of fear and a sense of helplessness. But if the incident is far removed from me, or if it happened a long time ago, I find myself drawn to the killer’s story, wanting to learn more and see more.

Lam Kor-wan's Arrest

On February 11, 1982, Hong Kong police discovered a woman's head and a pair of female arms in Shing Mun River in Sha Tin, which were later confirmed to belong to 22-year-old nightclub hostess Chan Fung-lan. This led to the uncovering of one of Hong Kong's top ten most notorious cases of serial murder — the "Rainy Night Butcher" case involving Lam Kor-wan.

Lam Kor-wan, originally named Lam Kwok-yu, was a Hong Kong serial killer and rapist, known as the "Rainy Night Butcher." Before committing his crimes, he worked as a night-shift taxi driver, and all his victims were women. Most of the murders occurred on rainy nights, when he would pick up his targets in his taxi, drive them to secluded areas, then drug and kill them. He would commit necrophilia and dismember their genitalia as specimens. Between February and July 1982, he killed a total of four victims.

The case went to trial on March 3, 1983. After the jury's verdict, Lam was convicted of four counts of murder and was originally sentenced to death by hanging. However, following the customary clemency, his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in August 1984.

The Russian Cannibal — Andrei Chikatilo

The former Soviet Union was a land filled with tragedies, and Andrei Chikatilo, dubbed "The Forest Strip Killer" by Western media, became a symbol of this tragic land.

Andrei Chikatilo was born in 1936 in Yabluchne, Ukraine. Before his birth, his parents had lost a son during the Ukrainian famine. During this time, widespread incidents of cannibalism occurred in Ukraine, and Andrei grew up with his parents instilling in him the belief that his older brother had been eaten by starving villagers. At the age of five, Andrei also witnessed the horrific rape of his mother by German occupying forces, further darkening his young psyche and leading to severe sexual dysfunction. Adding to his misfortune, after the war, his father was labeled a traitor, leading to societal scorn, which only intensified Andrei's antisocial tendencies.

Beginning in 1978, Andrei frequently lured women or children into deep forests, where he would strangle or stab them, commit necrophilia, disembowel the bodies, and even eat parts of the victims. He would also take the victims' eyeballs as trophies.

By 1990, Chikatilo had murdered at least 53 young women and boys, although this is only the conservative official estimate. Taking advantage of his job as a procurement officer, he selected his victims at train and bus stations, committing murders during his travels, with his crime spree spanning the entire territory of Russia.

Ironically, Chikatilo's trial coincided with a period of massive social upheaval. Despite being sentenced to death in 1992, the execution was delayed until 1994 due to the chaos, when he was finally executed by a gunshot.

Ted Bundy, born Theodore Cowell, appeared on the surface to be a promising young man from the University of Washington. After graduation, he even worked as an assistant to a politician in Washington State, with a successful career ahead of him. However, the other side of this talented individual revealed him to be the notorious serial killer, Ted Bundy.

From 1973 to 1978, the bodies of women were discovered one after another in Washington, Utah, Oregon, and other states. These bodies shared common traits: the victims had been bludgeoned on the head with a blunt object, sexually assaulted, strangled, and some had bite marks. According to witnesses, a young, handsome white man named Ted was often seen near the crime scenes. In 1974, a woman named Carol narrowly escaped Ted’s clutches and identified him a year later, leading to his arrest by the police.

However, Ted did not surrender easily and used the lack of evidence to challenge the investigation. As evidence against him mounted, realizing that he couldn’t win the case, Ted began planning an escape. In 1977, he successfully broke out and fled to Florida, where he continued his pattern of raping and killing women. Eventually, he was recaptured and faced justice. Ted Bundy was sentenced to death and executed in 1989, ending his life of crime in the electric chair. The generally accepted number of his victims is 35, but estimates range from 26 to 100.

While imprisoned, Bundy offered advice to the police on another serial killer case, the "Green River Killer" case, using his insights to help capture another murderer, a scenario later mirrored in The Silence of the Lambs. The idea of a highly intelligent serial killer is also reflected in the movie American Psycho.

The Highly Suspected Jack Tarrance

In the San Francisco Bay Area, there was once a notorious serial killer, brutal and cunning, who was never brought to justice, much like Jack the Ripper, leaving behind endless speculation for future generations. This was the Zodiac Killer.

The Zodiac Killer was primarily active during the 1960s and 1970s. Unlike Jack the Ripper, who targeted prostitutes, the Zodiac Killer's victims were mostly young couples or married pairs, with the exception of the unfortunate taxi driver Paul Stine. In letters sent to the media, the Zodiac Killer claimed to have murdered 37 people, but based on investigations, there is evidence proving he attempted to kill seven people, with five fatalities and two survivors. Other murders are suspected to be the work of the Zodiac Killer, but lack sufficient evidence.

The most distinctive trait of the Zodiac Killer was his desire to present himself in the media, more so than Jack the Ripper. He often wrote letters to the media to express his thoughts, even commenting on movies and TV shows. Most famously, he included mysterious ciphers in his letters, made up of astrological symbols, letters, and signs, claiming that if the ciphers were deciphered, his true identity would be revealed. However, to this day, no one has fully cracked these ciphers, adding an extra layer of mystery to the case.

The Zodiac Killer was never apprehended by the police. But 40 years later, a California man named Dennis Kaufman suddenly came forward and reported to the FBI that while sorting through his deceased stepfather Jack Tarrance's belongings in a public storage unit, he discovered several pieces of shocking evidence that he believed proved his stepfather Jack Tarrance was the Zodiac Killer. However, after the FBI investigated the claim, to this day, the conclusion remains "inconclusive."

The Six Main Suspects - Top Row, Far Right: Aaron Kosminski

Jack the Ripper is considered the founding figure of serial killers. Beyond the fact that his crimes occurred early on, this killer was never brought to justice, adding to his mystique. He was also extremely brazen, deliberately challenging society and the public.

The Jack the Ripper cases took place in London's East End, a well-known area populated by Eastern European immigrants and the poor. The crowded, narrow streets and diverse population made it a breeding ground for crime. In 1888, the body of a prostitute was found in Whitechapel, East End, marking the emergence of a notorious demon. Soon after, more female bodies were found in the area, all with their throats cut, their abdomens slashed open, intestines pulled out, and some organs or pieces of flesh removed.

What further alarmed residents was that newspapers soon received letters signed by "Jack the Ripper," with the sender brazenly claiming to be the killer and stating that he would continue committing murders. From then on, the name Jack the Ripper became a nightmarish symbol in London.

Jack the Ripper’s letter

It wasn’t until 2007 that this century-old mystery was finally solved using modern forensic technology. Investigators extracted DNA from semen stains found on a shawl at the murder scene of Catherine Eddowes, one of the victims. After comparing the DNA with the descendants of key suspects, it was confirmed that Aaron Kosminski, a Polish barber and one of the six main suspects, was indeed the true identity of Jack the Ripper.

Most of their victims are from vulnerable groups in society, such as prostitutes or young boys. Of course, there are exceptions, but I believe that most serial killers certainly wouldn’t be foolish enough to engage in a physical struggle with an adult man every time before killing them. The risk would be too high. Because of this, their method of killing doesn’t seem particularly terrifying but rather bloodthirsty and cowardly. In fact, the more gruesome the act, the deeper that cowardice appears.
