It takes its name from the river Var which, to the east, separated it at the time from the county of Nice. In Toulon, initially designated as head of the department, Draguignan succeeded. In 1860, the district of Grasse was attached to the territory of the former County of Nice to form the department of Alpes-Maritimes: henceforth, the river Var no longer crosses the department to which it gave its name.

The 19th and early 20th centuries were a period of prosperity and development. The Var is marked by the arrival of the railway, the creation of large industrial centres in Toulon and La Seyne, the specialization of agriculture and the beginnings of tourism. The Var saw two important events of the Second World War: the scuttling of the fleet in Toulon in 1942 and the landing of Provence in August 1944. During the second half of the 20th century, the department expanded, doubled its population and became a major tourist destination.
