Okonkwo is an unsympathetic character mainly because of his pride. He tried his hardest to not show remorse after killing a boy who called him father. He told himself to just deal with it. He does not show much emotion other than anger. In this setting and in the Ibo culture, an unsympathetic person is useful because they will do better in war when killing enemies and has the potential of being a ruler- since the care he has for himself would be great.

I think that it is quite clear that Okonkwo is an unsympathetic character. He does not show emotions that he himself is feeling, let alone showing the emotions of others or reciprocating them. He does not sympathize with others when things go wrong. He basically has no regard for other people's emotions at all. In the story he calls out a man during a meeting and insults him by equating him to a woman. When Okonkwo is asked to apologize, he does so, but he does not really mean it at all. He has no concern for others and their feelings. I believe that you lifestyle determines whether it is better to be sympathetic or not. Okonkwo is made more successful, because he does not concern himself with emotions and the emotions of others. He only focuses on his goals and this is beneficial for him. However, I think that we should be a healthy mix of both; sympathetic enough to feel for others and comfort those we care about, but not so sympathetic that other people's problems affect our own success.

i think Okonkwo is an unsympathetic character. It seems like his pride comes before his feelings when it comes to him making decisions. In one part of the novel it says, "Without further argument Okonkwo gave her a sound beating..." A sympathetic person is someone who regards another persons feelings and this is something that Okonkwo doesn't really do. I think being sympathetic is a better trait to have. Of course it is important to make decisions that will benefit you, but for me it is also important to think about how my decisions can positively or negatively affect another person.

Okonkwo's actions are not sympathetic. He is inconsiderate of mostly everyone around him but himself. He is willing to yell, kill and become violet for his own sake and for his own reputation. The only sympathetic actions have been the act of feeling weak and angry after the murder of Ikemefuna. He admired Ikemefuna and felt regret after killing him, despite the fact that he had the choice to be present during the murder or have the final strike. Okonkwo is overall filled with pride, he does not wish to be sympathetic or remorseful because of the manner that his father raised him. He saw Unoka as a weak failure and does everything in his power to oppose all that he stood for. Although one might say that sympathy is a good trait to have, in the setting of the story, it would be better to be unsympathetic because within the tribe it is important to be powerful and strong.

I think Okonkwo is both an unsympathetic and sympathetic person. He acts like he is unsympathetic and everyone who seems him thinks so too. He killed 5 people and used their heads to drink out of and this makes him seem unsympathetic. However, he is rather sympathetic because he did not kill his wife and missed on purpose when he was going to shoot at her. He also fell into a dark place after he killed Ikemefuna. If he was truly unsympathetic he would not have cared about Ikemefuna's death or him having a part in his death rather he would continue living his life as if nothing had happened. When it comes to which trait is better it depends on the context. I think that being unsympathetic is better when in Umofia because everyone sees this clan as one of the strongest therefore, being unsympathetic and ruthless is more beneficial in this specific context rather than being sympathetic.

While maybe more so unsympathetic, it is his pride and fear of being like his father that retains him from being sympathetic. He fears that by showing emotion he is seen as weak and powerless, which is what his father basically was. Being sympathetic is better to have because it pays off and feels more rewarding than being unsympathetic.

Since his whole life is dominated by his fear of not being like his father, he does not show sympathy because in his mind, emotions=weak=Unoka. Being sympathetic is a better trait to have because life would just be a lot easier if you were nice to people and had people on your side instead of people not liking you or fearing you. Having sympathy makes you a better person and a more understanding person.

I think Okonkwo is an unsympathetic person only because of the actions he has performed throughout the book so far and because of what his expected for his "kind". For example, he treated his loved ones harshly without question. He also did not express his feelings in the right manner. He would use his fists because he would stammer every time he talked. He also believed that men should not condone to feelings because it wouldn't make them masculine. Being sympathetic is a much better trait to have because you can go through life with a clean slate. In other words, things would go better for you in life in terms of your mindset, where you want to go, who you want to be and the people that support you or vice versa.

To him, showing emotion is a sign of weakness and this is not the way is wants to be portrayed. He is trying his best to be nothing like his father. His pride gets in the way of his actions and decisions. However, just because he is not sympathetic does not mean that he only has bad traits. For example, he is strong, determined and a leader. I think it is better to be sympathetic because you will make decisions that benefit others.

Through beatings and harsh punishments, he sees this a way to stay on top and defy everything his father ever was.

Okonkwo is a semi sympathetic character in the novel because he doesn't get too close to his feelings or else he will feel weak just like his father. However, at the same time when he feels glorious and prideful Okwonkwo gives a more reasonable sympathetic style for himself Instead of others. I think being sympathetic is a better trait to have because one person is more open minded towards certain situations and feeling more welcomed for the person and himself. When he is sitting with Obierika and talking about Ikemefuna, Okwonkwo is setting a calm but worried atmosphere. With the standard of always having a manly figure sets a barrier between being sympathetic.

Okonkwo is a sympathetic person at heart, but his actions convey him being an unsympathetic person. An example of this, is when he beat his wife. She disobeyed him and he was really angry. At the time, he wasn't thinking and got his gun after she stated that it had no bullets in it. Here is where Okonkwo's sympathetic side kicks in. Rather than shooting her, he shoots beside her, sparing her life. Although his actions previously were ruthless and unjustified, he doesn't let her words get to him and decides to let her live. He definitely wants to be more unsympathetic, but deep within him, there's a sympathetic side of Okonkwo.

I feel as though, Okonkwo is an unsympathetic character because he does not think about what he does and how it could affect him and the people around him. He just does things that he believes will help only himself, but he ends up making matter worse.

t he may bI think Okonkwo is an unsympathetic character because he doesn't like showing emotions for the fact thae seen as weak for doing that. He beats his wives and threatens his children just to prove the point that he isn't weak. He also doesn't care for what others have to say and disregard what is said to him because he feels like he is too good to be looked down at. It's better to be sympathetic, so you have a perception of what others feel and do.

I agree that being a sympathetic person in our society is better but for Okonkwo, I think in his culture, sympathy is weakness and in a culture were strength is smiled upon, showing brute strength and anger can get you the advantages and titles a clan deserves.

I agree, but do you think this sympathy should be so strong that it goes beyond just an understanding of what others feel and do?

I feel like Okonkwo wants to be sympathetic but due to his fear of being like his father and the repercussions of that fear, it makes him come off as an unsympathetic person. The way he treats his family, by his temper and his "constant nagging and beating" makes him look like he doesn't care about how and what they feel. His only focus is being wealthy and basically being everything his father was not.

I agree because Okonkwo feels as though if he resembles his father, then it makes him become a failure or weak so he tries to avoid going down that route but in his eyes, his intentions are pure.

Even though everything that was said was correct, didn't Okonkwo start to regret the fact that he killed his son? I think you should include that part in your answer.
