McGonigle, Hunter, Sipes, and Hebda discuss the importance of information technology in the nursing field in their 2014 journal article entitled, “Why Nurses Need to Understand Nursing Informatics.” The article stressed the importance of informatics within the nursing field. Health information can be used by nurses to help improve patient outcomes. Data can be collected in order to advance the nursing practice. Information, such as patient vitals, are used to trend a patient’s illness progression. I use informatics as an emergency department nurse every shift. I am able to access a patient’s history, what medication they use, and recent admission information. This information allows me and my coworkers to safely and efficiently care for our patients. Having this information at hand is especially important in the emergency department because turnover time is a crucial benchmark of department efficiency.
