Does women sexually objectifying themselves hurt their emotional wellbeing?

Reading the article written by The Conversation about the question is years of Men objectifying women making women objectify themselves in spite of men? I like this idea, as it brings a sense of female empowerment, but also makes you think, had women never felt objectified and were respected just as they were, would we be feeling the need to prove ourselves in such extreme ways? Is it even extreme what we do? Is it an act against men? And is it to rove something to them or just because we enjoy being able to express our sexuality with free will? I often find when I am reading or looking at posts by women who are dressed explicitly, is it a way of them channeling their deepest insecurities, or are they actually that comfortable with their bodies? As a woman who struggles with severe body image issues and low self-esteem. I know when I post something confident, it is a way of trying to prove something to myself. And I am seeking a man's validation. Rather than my own. So when I see women talking about how they 'Don't need a man' or 'Men aren't shit' i question whether that is out of a deep need inside to want to be loved and accepted by a man, or if they genuinely mean it.

Sex and Fashion/Porn goes mainstream are the topics I am initially interested by. Mainly because I consume a-lot (Probably too much) of mainstream media everyday and myself find i am enticed by the content that I see daily. Especially when it comes to the perfect idea of Sex and Love. Regarding Sex and Fashion, I find this interesting because I would like to learn and delve more into why we feel the need to dress certain ways and why what we wear is over-sexualised. ESPECIALLY in the younger generation.

Instagram is filled with explicit photographs which individualise fantasise about. They wish to be either this person or be engaging with the activity they are seeing because it looks physically appeasing or it fits with their current thoughts in their mind. Trouble is, because of this, we have high expectations for sex or how we wish to be treated because it is overly sexualised and over dramatised online. The realities are often much different. Our lives are real, they are not a movie. But social medias such as instagram make us feel as though we are.

Everything is sexualised in modern day. For example, celebrities are branded as being sex symbols, have their music written specifically with intention to sexualise. An example of this is Britney Spears, she was branded to be America's cute and sexy little blonde, she could do no wrong in the publics eye's because she was not allowed to mess up, she had and still has very powerful people in control of what she did/does. Her music was written to sell sex. Another example being Christina Aguilera. In her early days she was extremely raunchy, with songs such as fighter and candyman. Both worked closely together as children and obtained the same set of vocal powers. However the people in control of them both put them forward as different singers, Britney's singing voice was completely changed. This is a small example of hundreds of celebs who are branded as a sex symbol.

This week I am angry. Angry at society and how it still has not changed enough. I recently read an article on "Malaysia Now" which expresses a story of a rape case that was dropped in Peru, due to the fact the victim was wearing 'Red lacey underwear' which meant she intended to have sex that night. It sickens me that in 2020 we are still objectifying women in this way. A woman is able to wear whatever she wants without feeling as though she is 'asking for it' what if those pair of underpants were the only clean pair she had left for the week? WHAT IF she had a boyfriend, and yes she was intending to have sex, with her other half. Not with someone who has invaded her without consent. A woman can wear underwear that is sexy for them without intention and they can wear it with intention, intention and consent are two different things. What she was wearing on the night of her rape does not discourage that she was, infact, raped. And the person who did it should deal with the consequences of that considerably.

In the next few slides, a compilation of information on the importance of separating being sexual/ being sexualised is so important. Being sexual is empowering for a woman, She feels in control of her mind and her body in this sense, being sexualised, the power is out of her control and she is seen as something less of a woman and it can be quite degrading. I don't explain it as well as these next slides.

I find taboo topics of high interest, for example last year i searched into the menopause and how it has an effect on a womans emotional and physical wellbeing and how it is not discussed enough in soceity, even though we will either go through it or know someone close to home who goes through it. I believe everyone should be educated and women should be more prepared for it. Continuing on from this I have thought more into taboo topics, for example sexual topics that SHOULD be normalised but are not. Period sex being one. This is a natural bodily fluid that women endure each month and too many women feel embarrassed to have sex on their period because society teaches us for it to be wrong. When looking into the science of it, I found out that women's' sex drive heightens when they are on their period. So if theres any time to be having sex, it's then.

Another topic i wanted to discuss was how How are taboo sexual topics affecting the younger generations on social media in the present day. How accessible are these sites? This to me is important, I have two young nieces whom of which i fear for in this age of social media, the thigs they are being exposed to at such a young age, there is no cap for the data they are available to. Creating unrealistic standards for them as they grow older. One in particular alot of children are consuming these days is a Japanese game called Gatcha. Children are watching anime cartoons indulge in activities such as incest, bullying and harmful mental health issues. How this is even accessible I don't know. But its is and it's on Youtube.

Instagram is a huge one, I myself find myself striving for beauty standards that are impossible for me to reach and I allow myself to believe it is normal, so how could a young mind not think the same when they cant tell the difference between what is normal and not because they are too young to understand?
