“Never in the history of the world was society in so terrific flux as it is right now,” Jack London, 1908. “The swift changes in our industrial system are causing equally swift changes in our religious, political, and social structures. An unseen and fearful revolution is taking place in the fiber and structure of society. One can only dimly feel these things, but they are in the air, now, today.”

Progressivism is applied to a variety of responses to the economic and social problems rapid industrialization introduced to America. Social reformers, like Jane Addams, and journalists, like Jacob Riis and Ida Tarbel, were powerful voices for progressivism they were also college educated and believed that government could be a tool for change. They concentrated on exposing the evils of corporate greed, combating fear of immigrants, and urging Americans to think hard about what democracy meant. Other local leaders encouraged Americans to register to vote, fight political corruption, and let the voting public decide how issues should best be addressed. Jack London claims that the industrial system is shifting our religion, politics, and social beliefs.

With new trends in American Society, wide spread dissatisfaction created the Progressive Era. The American people had a very different idea on how the nation should be brought up than the United States government. They believed that they should clean up politics, provide the African American people with civil rights, allow women to vote, provide workers with higher wages and safer workplaces, and a union recognition that would guarantee these rights. The word reform became inspiration. Progressivism
generally refers to the belief that government or people acting on its behalf can be used to address social problems, inequalities, or inequities facing the nation. And during this time they changed all that and even more.
