         <description><![CDATA[<div> </div><ul><li>She has published a number of novels, poetry collections, and short-story writings, with her most famous literary work being The Color Purple. </li><li>Born in 1944 in Georgia, the eighth child in a family of poor sharecroppers, Alice Walker began her writing career in the late 1960’s. </li><li>A writer who often explores feminist and anti-racist themes, she has also published several collections of essays that concentrated on black women’s struggle for dignity and survival in a sexist and racist society. </li><li>In her writings, she describes her experiences and involvements in the civil rights movement, as well as the journeys she has traveled. </li><li>In most of her work, she themes the resiliency of the human spirit.</li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Mama: The narrator of the story. Mama describes herself as a big-boned woman with hands that are rough from years of physical labor. She has been both a mother and father figure to her two daughters. Poor and uneducated, she was not given the opportunity to break out of her rural life. <br><br></div><div>Maggie: The shy, retiring daughter who lives with Mama. Burned in a house fire as a young girl, Maggie lacks confidence and shuffles when she walks, often hanging in the background when there are other people around.<br><br></div><div>Dee: Mama’s older daughter, who has renamed herself Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo. <br><br></div><div>Hakim-A-Barber: Dee’s boyfriend or, possibly, husband. Hakim-a-barber is a Black Muslim whom Mama humorously refers to as Asalamalakim.</div>]]></description>
