Ideas can be vague like a pirate or detailed like a purple hippo wearing a tutu who can't dance. This makes writers block feel more fun.

Increased creative thinking and imagination. Let my students know that spelling is not a factor, but "spacing, periods, and capitalization" are.

I then tell students I want them to write a journal entry using at least one of the items from the board. I give them NO other directions and give them free rein to be creative.
