The Green New Deal was a movement created by the Green New Deal Task Force, in 2006, as a plan to implement 100% clean, renewable energy by 2030 by utilizing a carbon tax, a job guarantee, free college, single-payer healthcare, and a focus on using public programs. The name of the movement originated from the New Deal, a set of changes and public works projects undertaken by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933-1935 in response to the Great Depression in the United States. It combines Roosevelt’s economic approach with modern ideas such as renewable energy and resource efficiency. The proposals of the Green New Deal also proposed to address climate change along with achieving other social aims like job creation, economic growth, and reducing economic inequality.

This poster is one of two posters that were tweeted in a series to promote the Green New Deal. This poster features the Bronx Victory Memorial, with the positioning of the statue being a reference to Glen C. Sheffer’s 1933 Chicago World’s Fair poster design, which is a fitting choice for this type of movement given the mentioned poster event’s subtitle, “a century of progress”.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is an American politician who is a member of the Democratic Party, who was born in The Bronx, New York in 1989. At the age of 29, she was the youngest woman and the first female member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) to be elected to Congress.

On the contrary, however, the Green New Deal also has some major disadvantages and limitations, exemplified by how House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer issued a report outlining how the Green New Deal energy policies have led to higher gas prices, growing uncertainty in America’s power sector, confusion in the market for new cars and appliances, and a labyrinth of expensive regulatory hurdles which have led to—and will continue to lead to—increased costs for all American consumers and businesses. Another disadvantage is that there are those who would oppose this movement due to its goal of transitioning off of nuclear and fossil fuels as soon as possible or it’s just that there are people who don’t find any interest in the movement and they don’t want to change their current lifestyle.
