The natives had good relations with the colonists in Rhode Island until the King Philip’s War when, in retaliation for the Great Swamp Massacre, the Narragansetts burned Providence.</div>]]></description>

The Narragansett Tribe was weak at the time of his arrival, and Williams purchased some of their land for the early Rhode Island settlers.
