The "Half-Life" franchise is a famous series due to each entry of the franchise being revolutionary in terms of game play.

Half-Life (1998)

Plot- Gordon Freeman tries to escape Black Mesa during an event that causes an inter-dimensional event that caused creatures from a border world know as Xen that allows inter-dimensional traveling. Gordon Freeman defeats the leader of Xen, the Nihilanth. Shortly after the fight, Gordon is confronted by a mysterious figure trough out the game known as G-man. G-man tells Gordon that due to his performance in Black Mesa Gordon has a choice work for him or die from the creatures of Xen.

What did it do for the genre- It was the first-ever first-person game with "WASD" controls as default, scripted sequences in single-player, puzzle-based, and instead of traversing one level after the next you would instead the map would load in as you continued in the story giving the feeling of all of the levels connected. Plus, spawned two popular franchises, "Counter-Strike", and "Team Fortress".

Half-Life 2 (2004)

Plot- After the Black Mesa incident the Combine Empire takes over Earth. Gordon is summoned from G-man. Gordon meets Alyx the daughter of Eli Vance (the leader of the resistance and a former Black Mesa scientist). They find that Eli was taken to a maximum prison known as Nova Prospket. Gordon and Alyx fail with Eli getting brought to the Citadel, the location of the leader of the Combine. They see that humans are rebelling against the combine and rescue Eli successfully but the Citadel starts to melt down causing a super portal to form allowing more combine to reach Earth. With the help of two other former scientists from Black Mesa, they launch a rocket to tear apart the portal. Shortly after the victory Combine Administrators find the base killing Eli.

What it did for the genre- It gave an amazing story with better story telling mechanics just through dialogue and events in the game. Introduced physics based puzzle solving. It was so revolutionary at the time the trailer for the game was considered to be just an animation, instead of actual game play.

The large amounts of poorly designed first person and a slight over saturation of first person games being released with easy to under stand game play leads to slight disinterest in the medium . Still even if the amount of interest has gone down overtime they will still be popular.
