Arn's life is changed when he is taken by the Khmer Rouge and and forced to do labor in a work camp. This causes Arn's personality and outlook on life to change. In the beginning of the book Arn is deceiving and a gambler in it for the money. He makes his own rules and is a rule breaker. "I give the head monk a little money so I can sneak out of the temple to play" (McCormick 8). Arn sneaks out of class to go and gamble. He is a rulebreaker. " I make my eye blank. You show you care, you die. You show fear, you die. You show nothing, maybe you live." (McCormick 53) Arn changes from his rebel mentality so that he can survive. This work camp teaches him that if he wants to live he needs to obey everything they tell him to do. These changes that arn went through were not only him. During most events like these where it is a life or death situation people adapt to their surroundings. In this case  Arn adapts to the war work camp lifestyle in order for him to keep his life. He obeys everything he is told and never rebels like he did in his old life. Sombo is the leader that Arn looks up to. Although Sombo is a part of the Khmer Rouge Arn knows deep down that Sombo has good intentions. The issue in the book is war and sombo contributes to this issue. Sombo fights and does whatever the Khmer Rouge leaders tell him to do. This is how it was like for most of the lower ranking people in the Khmer Rouge. Sombo has a fear that he will be killed if he does not respect high ranking orders. These orders that are given to him add to the war issue. Nobody wanted to die and because of this war went on. As the war goes on Arn notices that Sombo is becoming more strict and not like his old self. He is becoming a true "Khmer Rouge". Sombo transforms into a full Khmer Rouge soldier and kills many people in the war. War is the biggest piece to this book. War is presented in the book from beginning to the end. At the start you can see that war is coming because people are evacuating their houses and walking to new camps where they will work and live. In the end Arn is fighting as a young boy in the actual war. Arn is apart of the younger group of soldiers whose jobs were to scout out the enemy vietnamese soldiers. Countries are formed and destroyed from war. Lives are ruined because of war. War is not a good thing but sadly it is needed for our world to function. War has been around since people have been alive. It is how conflicts are resolved.
