Hello. My name in full is Panarin Sriyathep and Panpan or Pan for short. I studied animation back in BKK, but I wanted to try out something that are more traditional and out of my initial comfort interest.

My goal for my study at BCU is to explore myself and discover my expertise further in Illustrations, while using the facilities and experienced tutors to the fullest.

My interest in Illustrations mostly revolves around books. That includes, book cover - not limited to novels or children storybook or maybe an illustration for a pocketbook - Conceptual posters, or any illustration that has to do with Narrative storytelling.

I also would love to learn more about new printing techniques that would make my artwork looks chic or giving the old school comic vibe to it.

22/09/24 - updated 30/09/24

First I did a mind map of possible concepts that I came up with. Later, I re-wrote it down on my notes for a more organized dump. Most of my ideas revolve around life experiences and a bit of philosophy. There are a few playful ideas and literature based ideas.

I decided to focus on one of my idea which involves a famous thai phrase, พลิกวิกฤตให้เป็นโอกาส (flip the crisis into an opportunity), which has the same similar meaning to an English idiom, every cloud has a silver lining.

As seen from the right page, I dig further down on this idea and thought of a way that I could visualize for the possible illustration I could go for. For the art direction I planned to go for maybe based with a mixture of abstract graphic & contemporary art as I’ve always draw things based on real life and wanted to try ideas that will be outside my comfort expertise.

I analyze further into my Thai phrase idea and mix similar philosophy and aesthetic based idea from Japan called “Wabi Sabi”.

Wabi Sabi refers to acceptance of transience and imperfection, and an appreciation of the beauty of impermanence of nature.

Although the two concepts don’t share the exact meaning, both encourage finding value and beauty in less-than-ideal situations. This ties directly into the theme of the exhibition, Lost & Found: losing the ideal, but finding the beauty within the imperfections.

Thus, I decided to mix the concept of the stated thai phrase visually with the aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi.

The drip technique gives me an idea on having a coffee mug stained on a paper (almost everyone probably experienced this before). It’s usually seen as a mistake or an imperfection, but with the right perspective, that stain can unexpectedly turn into art. It’s a perfect example of how something unintentional can become beautiful, mirroring the idea of finding art in the unexpected.

I also looked at KrystynaSiwekArt, and may adopt similar ideas of using a dirty drop of water that turns into beautiful art.

I also play with the contrast of black and white, which makes the visual more impactful. This is my latest idea for now.

But basically my idea was more of a conceptual context of my interpretation of "finding opportunities in the crisis".

I thought of putting rhetorical questions that could be thought provoking for audience in the pages while showing my process behind the final poster. I planned to have messy lines of black pen and pencil on the first few pages and lowering the intensity to the last page just like how the crisis started to be solved.

However, I decided to move on to a new idea, as I feel like I wanted to try something new and unlike my usual style.

Since one of my idea was inspired by bits of the story of the literature, Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens. I decided to find a scanned E-book of it online to let the overall zine have a harmony of a scanned collage feels. I used the concept of "Blackout Poetry" to emphasized the part of the chapter where it links with the idea of my concept along with the story. This page is my favorite one so far :))

Although it may not fully aligned with my concept but his growth in gaining a new perspective in his life can be connected vaguely with my idea.

I decided to experiment with blackout poetry to create a new context that fit with my idea as well as maintaining the harmony of the overall aesthetic of the zine.
