The Tea Act of 1773 was an attempt by the British Parliament to give the bankrupt East India Company a monopoly on the tea trade to the colonies. The company could sell tea directly to the colonists and at a lower price, which hurt the colonial merchants. Although the colonists could buy tea at a cheaper price, they did not allow Parliament to have the authority to tax them.
