I would love being an AP because I have a passion for shaping young students' minds and teaching them how to become a successful young adult at an early age.

After reviewing the ASCD website, I realized that poverty is one of the issues many schools face every day. Children who are experiencing poverty are sometimes far behind academically and this becomes an issue that administrators and teachers deal with. Gathering resources and especially making them available to students and families are very important as an administrator. The No Child Left Behind Act comes into play for children of low socioeconomic backgrounds. Not understanding the legalities of this issue, could be crucial to an administrators career.

I spoke with James McCarter, the Assistant Principal at Cuero Junior High School in Cuero, TX, about legal issues he faces often at work.

#1 Documenting disciplinary actions is something administrators face every day. It is very important that all details are documented as to why the student got in trouble, what took place, and what the exact punishment was.

#2 T-Tess walkthroughs and formal observations are something administrators do often. Determining whether teachers are doing their job and doing it correctly is important upon distributing contracts for renewal.

#3 Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) meetings are held often for students with disabilities. It is important that teachers, parents, special education teachers, and administrators are present at these meetings to determine what is best for the student's learning pathway.

#4 Contacting parents is something AP's do each day and quite often each day. Communication can be key when dealing with student issues. Letting parents or guardians be aware of everything going on will really be helpful if a problem arises

#5 Understanding data and demographics is very important as an administrator. Understanding which students qualify for free or reduced lunches, the percentage of low socioeconomic students, and the performance rate of these students are legal issues they face every day.
(J. McCarter, personal communication, October 25, 2018)

After reviewing the NEA website, I realized that there are several issues school administrators face and should be made aware of each day.

One legal issue I discovered was how congress passed a bill that no longer allows schools to use federal funding to train their staff how to use firearms as well as purchase them for school emergency use.

Another issue I discovered was how congress rejected the request to eliminate Title II. This is important to note for administrators because it reduces class sizes and helps provide professional development for staff.

The T-TESS is a good tool to use as an administrator because it is a good deciding factor on whether or not to renew a teacher or staff member's contract. Having documentation from walkthrough's and observations can help eliminate any legal issues that could arise if a contract was not given for renewal.

While performing walkthroughs or observations, administrators can also document whether or not a teacher is using accommodations for students with special education services. This issue could always turn into a serious legal matter if the teacher or administration is not providing the student with what they need to be successful.
