At the beginning we see that the character's uncle and aunt passed away, then we see that the character's father and little brother get sick from working so much under the sun. He was there for a week without teaching, and later running away with the wife.

The story after is about a grandfather and his grandson, and how the grandson told his that he wanted the next 10 years to pass very fast, and the grandfather replied to him  that he was very stupid. He later understood why. 

I can possibly see a connection with the first story to the chapter, because maybe if his father would've learned carpentry, he wouldn't have suffered a sunstroke, as well as his little brother.

I found it interesting how in this chapter, the sun specifically, played a very important role. The sun was the reason his father and his little brother got sick in first place. "At times they could barely breathe, then they would black out and they would become fearful of getting sun-struck, but they kept on working" (p. 104). The sun here, seems to be an important symbol of fear and life, at the moment. It determined whether they would make it until the end of the day or not. 

Another metaphor that I found in this chapter is about the earth. The earth also plays a big role in this chapter as well as in the title of the book itself. The earth seems to be the one that may eat him and his family alive, despite everything his family has done for the earth itself. "Poor Dad, always working so hard. I think he was born working. Like he says, barely five years old and already helping his father plant corn. All the time feeding the earth and the sun, only to one day, just like that, get struck by the sun." It provides us with more information on how hard it is to be working under the sun, and having children with you, even when you're unable to provide them water.
