How is the ‘release ceremony’ described? What do they do during this event? In the book, do some lives hold more value than others? Explain.

The Release Ceremony is described as a peaceful and happy ceremony that marks the end of a cicle of labor and service. But actually, it is similar to a burial, but the person is alive. The value of the live is related to the assignment given to the person. As much the assignment makes difference and contribuite for the community, more value is the person's life.

Ps. No one knows where are going, and never are seen anymore.

Question 1: Naming and Replacement Child

During the Ceremony of One, the Naming process happens when the Nurturers bring each child to the stage, and the Chief Elder announces their new name, which has been carefully chosen by the Committee of Elders. Parents do not select names; they are assigned by the community to maintain order and equality. A “replacement child” is given to a family who has lost a child. For example, after the tragic loss of Caleb, another child was given the same name to replace him. This practice shows how the community tries to avoid emotional attachment to grief by erasing it with substitution.

Question 2: Assignments and Jonas’ Ceremony

Several Assignments are mentioned during the Ceremony of Twelve, such as Nurturer, Birthmother, Instructor of Threes, and Fish Hatchery Attendant. One striking aspect is how people are assigned roles for life without choice, and some roles, like Birthmother, are seen as low status despite their importance. During Jonas’ ceremony, the Chief Elder skips his name, causing tension and confusion among the audience. Later, it is revealed that Jonas was not assigned but selected to be the next Receiver of Memory, an honor that brings both admiration and fear because of its heavy responsibility.

Question 3: Qualities of a Receiver of Memory

To become a Receiver of Memory, a person must possess intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom, and the Capacity to See Beyond. These qualities are essential because the Receiver must carry the community’s collective memories, both joyful and painful, and advise the Elders in difficult decisions. In my opinion, this Assignment means living with the emotional burdens of an entire civilization while being completely isolated, as no one else shares the Receiver’s experiences or understands their pain.

Question 4: Jonas’ Instructions and Changing Perception

After receiving his Assignment, Jonas is given specific instructions: he must report for training each day, is allowed to lie, cannot discuss his training, and is exempt from rules against rudeness. He also cannot apply for pain relief or request release. These rules shock Jonas, especially the permission to lie, which challenges his belief that no one in the community ever lies. As his training progresses, Jonas begins to see his world differently, realizing the lack of emotions, colors, and true experiences in the lives of his family and friends. This awareness makes him feel increasingly disconnected from his community.

Question 5: Only One Receiver and Jonas’ First Day

There is only one Receiver of Memory in the community because the position requires handling all of humanity’s memories—both beautiful and painful—which could overwhelm others. On Jonas’ first day, he enters the Receiver’s private room filled with books, a luxury unseen elsewhere in the community. The setting feels warm and alive, contrasting sharply with the sterile sameness outside. The Giver begins Jonas’ training by transferring the memory of snow and sledding. Jonas feels a mixture of fear, wonder, and excitement as he experiences real sensations for the first time.

Some people may want The Giver banned because it addresses complex and controversial themes like death, suffering, individuality, and questioning authority. It challenges the idea of a perfect society by showing the cost of suppressing emotions, memories, and free will. These subjects can make readers uncomfortable, especially younger audiences, leading some to believe the book is inappropriate for schools. However, these very themes are what make the book meaningful and important.
