Ancient Rome, or as it is called today Italy, is surrounded by 3 bodies of water. To be specific, they are seas. The Ligurian Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea. These all impacted Rome because they helped protect Rome from enemies coming from water. This helped because the Rome's were able to see these enemies, and get ready before the enemies could attack. These waters impacted the settlement of Ancient Rome because there were a couple of rivers flowing through Rome, but there were no more than like 3-4 fresh water rivers. The seas didn't really help much, because seas are saltwater, so they couldn't use it for drinking or farming.

Not only is Ancient Rome surrounded in water, but it's also blocked off by mountain ranges called the alps. These mountains impacted Rome because they isolated Rome from inland. They also helped protect Rome because no one could get over them very easily. This means that Rome probably had little worry about someone trying to attack them. This impacted the settlement because the Romans could settle closer to these mountains because they were so cold, and they probably didn't have the best dirt to farm with.

The Apennines were a pretty big mountain range. they spread from one side Rome, or Italy, to the other. This helped to protect Rome because it kept them isolated. it also hurt them because it kept them isolated. Meaning, enemies couldn't get around or over the mountains very well, and that meant that the Romans couldn't get over them to see what was on the other side. This impacted Rome because they couldn't use the land by these mountains for farming, because it was too bumpy and rocky.
