Coral Reefs

Coral Reefs are the most beautiful resource in the ocean. This resource is very important to our ecosystem. The ocean has survived millions of years and the coral reef has played a big part in its health .All life in ocean would suffer without the coral reefs. We need to understand how to protect the coral reef provides for us.

The coral reef lives in the pacific ocean like the Indian ocean,Caribbean Sea,Red Sea and Arabian Gulf. Corals can also live in cold water like Antarctica! And others have to live in warm water just to survive. Some do live by tropical and subtropical waters. As you can see coral reefs can grow in surprising places such as Japan and Texas.

Coral likes to eat zooplankton.Which they look like baby shrimp but there not.Corals also eat algae which makes sugar for energy. At night some Corals stretch out their long tentacles to feed.

The Coral Reefs are made of layers of calcium carbonate.Coral polyps live over calcium carbonate skeleton.Scleractinians are the corals that mostly what builds the reef. The coral is so tiny it only grows a few inches a year.

There are many purposes of a coral reef.A coral reef can protect beaches from erosion by storms. The most important purpose is to provide protection from ocean life.Animals and plant use the plants for protection from storms and predators.Without coral reef the ocean's ecosystem would fail!!!
