I grew up believing that women have to have a partner to be as strong as they can be, and as I gained experience in the world I learned that this is nowhere near the truth. Though this was originally written by Cher, I absolutely love the cover. It has a completely different energy that fills my heart. The woman empowerment is astonishing, and I listen to it on a nearly weekly basis as a reminder that I’m stronger than I think. That reminder is something everyone needs, no matter their gender.

Abstract art is something I have always been drawn to. I have not been able to see well since I was 8 years old. Though I never considered this a disability, it made my life difficult. I don’t see all the fine details in life. It was a high school art class that led me to the appreciation of abstract art, it was like seeing the world through my eyes. For my final project, I had painted an abstract piece that I modeled after Picasso and Van Gough. It was one of the first times in my life that I had felt all that creative.

As a child, I was obsessed with outer space. I wanted to be the first woman on Mars. I wanted to be that leader. The strength and innovation that it took to get there seemed so in reach for me. This image is seen everywhere and in so many movies. When man landed on the moon, it was revolutionary, it was so powerful. I went to Kennedy Space Center, and that joy and amazement I felt sparked all over again. I don’t think that I will always be a child when it comes to this. To me, you can tell a lot about a person when you see what brings out that inner child in them, or if you never do see that at all.

For me, documentaries are one of the most humbling things that exist. I am white, and I understand that privilege. This was one of my most recent and favorite documentaries, and it just puts it into perspective for me how self centered and egotistical we are as humans. I appreciate the reality check that it is, meanwhile I’m educating myself on the state of our world. It is the closest I get to watching the news. I hope I never outgrow this, I want to keep recognizing my place in the world and what I need to do for it.

Spirituality is often confused with religion, and it isn’t commonly talked about amongst people. It was largely popular in the 60s, and has since evolved. This song is very calming, and covers a lot of things that I have talked about with other people, things that I find interesting and wholesome. To be able to speak with someone so private about these things puts you on another level with them. Sharing this song brings me joy and I hope that the band get’s the recognition they deserve, because it isn’t easy to open up.

We all have so many pieces that makeup who we are, what we stand for, and what we believe. This exhibit expresses multiple sides of myself that craft a glimpse into my unorderly world. Each artifact represents a vastly different part of myself, and each part pertaining to different aspects of my identity and how that shaped me as a person.

I don’t read poetry, it’s not something I ever did with my free time. This one in particular however, stood out in that we as a society don’t normally talk about work that women put in. We are depicted as soft, delicate, and fragile. So upon reading this work, I found myself feeling for this woman. I don’t know if I felt sad for her, happy that she was being talked about, or upset that there is no between when we talk about work in a woman’s life. Why are they oppressed or privileged? There is so much to unpack, and I have yet to understand it all.

It wasn’t until all that recently that women and men started speaking up about rape. No one still talks about it like they should. There was this large wall put up on consent, and after taking a few minutes to read through each part, I thought to myself that I’m not sure that anyone has ever truly given consent 100% of the time. I’m sure that most men and women who have suffered from this don’t know how to talk about it. And that specifically includes men, they are just as much a victim, and even more of an outsider. I will admit, I laughed when I read this poem. I did. But at the end, I cried. Because ultimately I was taught by multiple people that it was funny. Maybe we’re all laughing to hide the pain.

This article was a very interesting read from class. I was always taught that “brains were wired differently” and in general I find the brain fascinating. I still am unsure of what or who to believe. It seems that anyone can say that scientists show whatever findings to help prove their point. I’m tired of black and white, left or right, sort of understanding. From what I see, the mind is wondrous, and we each work differently. No two people are the same.

We talked about it, and I was actively working on a project to convey the idea of stereotypes in film, but it wasn’t until I read this essay that I had understood what I was trying to learn and what I was trying to say. It’s hidden and subtle to a young or ignorant mind, but for many it isn’t. And it clicked for me at that moment. I have often been compared to that stereotypical housewife that needs children and an unhappy marriage.
