WHAT IS CRITICAL THINKING?

In everyday life the term ‘critical’ is often seen as negative or destructive. Being critical in academiclife, however, does not mean questioning things randomly, or for the sake of ‘nit-picking’. Instead, academic work aims to get as near as possible to the truth. Critical thinking in any subject or discipline is the way in which this is done, along with the more specialised applications of theory, the methods and techniques, which have been developed for the subject. Critical thinking then, is the attempt to ask and answer questions systematically. This means asking the most useful questions in the most productive sequence in order to yield a coherent and credible ‘story’. So, thinking criticallymeans asking questions. Instead of accepting ‘at face value’ what you read or hear, critical thinkerslook for evidence and for good reasons before believing something to be true. This is at the heart of what it means to be a scientist, researcher, scholar or professional in any field.

Mnemonics are memory tools that you can create yourself, to form associations with information that is otherwise difficult to recall. This might involve creating vivid mental pictures; making up stories to remember a sequence of information; or picturing facts as locations on a map.

For example, if a medical student wanted to recall that the three types of depressants are barbiturates, alcohol and tranquilizers, they could picture a depressed batwho had taken all three.

Turn the individual chunks of information into vivid mental images, then connect the images in a story that unfolds throughout a location
you know well. You could picture your first image by the front door of the house you grew up in; then imagine wandering into the kitchen and finding your next two images arguing in there, whilst the next three dance together
in the living room...

Memory is a very important part of learning, and one which often worries students when revising for exams. It ispossible to improve your memory, but there is no magic wand; hard work is involved. However, developing memory techniques that suit you will be useful for life as well as university!

It is also very important that you regularly review the knowledge that you are acquiring; this is how things move from short-term to longterm memory and become easier to recall at speed. Effective revision is an ongoing process, not a cramming session just before the exams. This strategy also helps you to acquire a knowledge base rather than simply to pass an exam and then forget the information.

Education is the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university (Oxford dictionary). It is necessary to improve our skills in every part. Human mind works with knowledge and it has to be given in an academic journey but it can be with different systems. All around the world, there are different systems which gather under two general groups; East and West education system. These two systems have different type of practicing and understanding except some same points. Differences between these two, like understandable of how students have to be teached and encouraged by their teachers or the way of learning styles which was seen on worldwide exams, also bring varied consequences about students behavior in their academic and social life.

In both education systems, students are educated by different understandable of learning style according to their culture for reaching their goals and for being successful in every part of their academic and social life. For western education system, students show themselves with creativity and performance in their class. They are encouraged by their teachers and they are comfortable about learning because deeper understanding is the base of their education system. The success of western students in their exams depends on their talents according to teachers and sometimes this might be the sign of weakness and lower ability (Spiegel, 2012). The only way to get over this situation, students have to listen carefully their teachers and have to show that they can achieve when they want. According to eastern education system, students aren’t accustomed to give up when they fail because hard work is the base of their learning system (ibid.). The individual success in exams, which was seen on grades, is the most powerful way for eastern students to show themselves. It’s hard to improve their true skills and areas because students have to learn a lot of things in a short period of time by themselves and they don’t have much time for their interests, so discipline is everything for eastern students to be successful in their academic education and interests. Against to eastern system, the western students can improve themselves in their true skills.

It’s important to emphasize that the results of worldwide exams are the best way to compare achievement of both education system which were under the influence of their cultures. Against to western students, eastern students are more successful in worldwide exams despite their conservative and inactive education system. It might be the effect of their culture because teaching methods are not only factor to bring high grades to students. So, the culture which was given in families, takes an important part of their success and Dr. Jerrim also says that “The attitudes and beliefs of east Asian parents in still in their children make an important contribution to their high levels of academic achievement.” (2014). Like it’s mentioned before, their achievement was seen in the results of worldwide exams like PISA (The Programme for International Student Assessment). Eastern students as Chinese always overcome the western students in these tests. In the other hand western students also want to be successful but they have to improve themselves. So as a respond of their low results in these exams, western countries chose approaching to the eastern education style. For example, in England, the department of education announced a budget to bring the eastern teachers to help them in their improvement period. (Weale S.2014).

It is a well-known fact that to be a successful person; people should be capable of carrying responsibility and being conscious. Success always belongs to the person itself. The methods, which were discussed in second and third paragraph, are just the vehicles which lead a way to achievement. So, in whole differences between east and west education system, the most significant difference is the results of worldwide exams because in the end of students educational life, the only way to show their success to their future company will be these tests.

In summary, both type of education have a different base and structure on the way of success. Culture effects on worldwide exams, behavior of students about their success, understanding of how students show their achievement are the relevant differences between them. With negative and positive side of these two systems, they are so important to improve our minds and to be a person who capable to achieve everything.
