AI and bias

What kind of bias does AI have?

Initial thoughts:

I would think that AI has a bias supporting the status quo, so be on the side of neoliberalism. AI would look at history as it is teached in the west because the companies that own AI are mostly from the first world. Then there are countries like China and Russia with their own AI’s that have a different bias of course.

Answer from the sources:

AI’s bias depends on the data it is given access to. Depending on the sample size of data it will give different results in image generation and perception. For example an AI that is given more pictures of green apples and less of red apples wont be able to perceive the red ones as easily. So in conclusion different AI’s have different biases due to differing data.

Sources:

https://www.chapman.edu/ai/bias-in-ai.aspx

https://www.ibm.com/blog/shedding-light-on-ai-bias-with-real-world-examples/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59bMh59JQDo

https://news.mit.edu/2018/study-finds-gender-skin-type-bias-artificial-intelligence-systems-0212

But how does it learn all that information?

There is no easy way to explain how AI learns because there is more than one way to AI learn. Simply explained, AI learns using the data it collects. That is the simplest learning process.

I founded these simple explanations from https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/feb/24/ai-artificial-intelligence-chatbots-to-deepfakes .

How developed AI is now?

Artificial Intelligence has improved a lot in such a short timeline and its development will increase even more from this.

Following study gives an example of how much AI has improved:

(picture above)

“This chart zooms into the last two decades of AI development. The plotted data stems from several tests in which human and AI performance were evaluated in five domains: handwriting recognition, speech recognition, image recognition, reading comprehension, and language understanding.

Within each domain, the initial performance of the AI is set to –100. Human performance is used as a baseline, set to zero. When the AI’s performance crosses the zero line, it scored more points than humans.

Just 10 years ago, no machine could reliably provide language or image recognition at a human level. However, AI systems have become much more capable and are now beating humans in these domains, at least in some tests.”

Technology has enormous potential for good. Still, it comes with significant disadvantages and high risks. We have still a lot of things to figure out. One thing we do know is that we’ve probably only scratched the surface in terms of what is possible.

https://ourworldindata.org/artificial-intelligence

The learning of artificial intelligence is mainly based on the methods of machine learning and deep learning.

Machine learning is a method in which artificial intelligence applies algorithms on training data and thus learns to recognize patterns or make predictions from new data. This training data can be, for example, images, texts, audio files, or other information.

Deep learning is a subfield of machine learning that uses multi-layered neural networks. These neural networks mimic the functioning of the human brain and learn to detect complex features and abstractions at a deeper level. Through deep learning, artificial intelligence can learn hierarchical features, such as the edges of an image, shapes, and ultimately, for example, facial recognition.

A deep video on deep learning:https://youtu.be/aircAruvnKk?feature=shared

How can we ensure that AI is used responsibly?

AI has many problems with responsibly. I think companies need to develop it so that it won't be used irresponsibly. AI can be used for good, and it is important that it can be used safely.

For example, Microsofts AI image generator has had problems with its content not being safe. The content that the AI generator has created has been inappropriate. The company's artificial intelligence engineer has made a complaint regarding the issue.

AI programs also have problems with copyright laws. AIs have been created with tons of pictures, codes and text and we cannot be sure where those pictures come from. Those sources have most likely been taken without permission. It creates an ethical problem.

If we want to use AI responsibly companies need to make sure that their AI generators are safe.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/mar/06/microsoft-ai-explicit-image-safety

Empathy is inside humans, and we can improve it by teaching it to each other. A person can express and understand the feelings of others. Robots and AI only read and process information and answer by its program If a person cries, another person knows what to do.
