The conflict in the story is person vs. racism. Race is a big problem in the story when a white police officer shot and killed a black unharmed sober teenager. Throughout the story race comes into the story as a major conflict especially for the main character Starr who sees the community divide into white and black with all arguments and legal issues.

The Metaphorical object is justice. The main character values justice for her friend Khalil and all victims of gun violence. She wants everyone to know how her community was affected and wants to stop gun violence from accruing.

One object that my character values is a rose. A rose is a metaphor for the whole story and the Starr. The metaphor is "Be roses that grow in concrete." For Starr and the community it means even in the hardest of times be someone who stays strong and stands tall. Throughout the story Starr stands up for what she believes in and doesn't back down no matter what anyone says.

A significant quote in the book is '"You okay Starr-" Pow! One... Pow! Two... Pow! Three... He falls to the ground." In this moment Khalil has been shot and has said his last words to Starr and to the world. In that moment Starr rushed to his side even in the shock and sadness anger outraged at the police officer. She remembers his number as 115, she believes what he did was so inhumane he doesn't deserve to be recognized by his given name.
