I thought it was interesting that the STEM jobs made up 71%, yet we only have 8% graduating with a computer science degree. Growing up here in Washoe County, we were constantly told that computers were the wave of the future, that if we wanted jobs that we would learn the ins and outs of a computer. I can remember using CompuServe before there was AOL (which now owns CompuServe). The dial-up modem was the sound that connected you to the World Wide Web. Now we hold computers in our hands and have an app for everything. I also really like the fact that parents know whats best for their kids and want the education profession to teach it to them.

The disparity between what families want and what schools teach seems to be a simplistic way of looking at the issue, especially in Nevada. With school funding and teacher evaluations tied to testing, there is little incentive for teachers or schools to take the time to teach coding. Similarly, if families want this skill to be taught, they need to be willing to spend public funds on classroom technology that benefits each individual student.

CS as an Elective vs. Requirement

It is very interesting how there are 33 states that allow CS to be a math/science requirement. Many of those states are surrounding Nevada; such as the amazing California, Oregon, Arizona, etc. Yet Nevada still has CS as an elective (Well the few schools that offer it, that is). Being that we are so low in our education ranking, you think Nevada would learn from its neighbors and jump on board with this idea.

It is shocking to me that the State of Nevada does not have developed CS curriculum standards beginning in the Elementary schools. Let's change that!
