Repetition Described

Repetition is the act of something being repeated. In music, this means a string of notes will be played repeatedly, most likely, until the song reaches a close. I agree with Ben Ratliff's views on repetition. I believe you can find repetition in almost every piece of music because the repetition allows the listener to have a concept of what's to come next. Yet, even though repetition is a key concept, you have to have variation in the music or it will become a massive annoyance instead of something you seek to listen to. An example of this can be seen in James Brown's "Ain't It Funky Now". The music has a continuous string of notes in the background that represent repetition, but it shows variation in the vocal inputs of James Brown and the occasional techno piano notes. A modern example of repetition and usually be seen in the genre rap. Rap includes a steady repeated background beat and someone rapping over it. A perfect example of this can be seen in Logic's song Black SpiderMan. Even though they layer multiple instruments and vocals as the song progresses over the original piano beat you can hear clearly in the beginning, the piano stay consistent throughout. This shows variation in repetition.
