The soviet union and united states split the peninsula intending to keep the country together but the soviet union did not comply. United nations demanded north Korea to withdraw to the border among other attempts to keep the peace. The July 1953 armistice may have ended the war, but it has not led to a peace treaty between North and South Korea.
