In the song "Just Like You" by Joyner Lucas, he portrays the kids as the speaker. The occasion of this song was for kids to be raised or lead in the right path that will result in a better future for them. Throughout the song it has a very angry or frustrated tone as it has the kids speaking towards the parents. For this song I felt it had two types of audiences. The first type of audience would be for the adults who are in the position of setting a bad example, and the other for the kids who feel that they have to follow in the footsteps of their peers. That goes into his purpose of the song which was to show the adults what kids actually think of their actions, and to show kids they don't have to follow the people setting a bad example in their life. The overall subject of this songs is to set good examples and think for yourself. Throughout this song i believe Lucas focused on using pathos and ethos to really get his point across on this subject.

Ethos Lyrics

In this song credibility was something Lucas focused on to get his point across, for example in the third verse line 16 Lucas says, " My life was blurry, you made it clearer." This uses ethos to show that the role models that kids look up to made a it clear on what they have to do to be successful, as for when they were following the person who set a bad example, they never really knew where they were gonna go, and they would go through life not knowing where they are going. Another way Lucas used ethos was by saying, "Cause lately, I've been tryna live this thugs life and I'm not convinced." In this lyric Lucas tries to say that he has done all of these things and none of them have every helped him be successful, he even states it in an interview by genius, that he sold drugs, has been arrested, even been in jail, and he doesn't recommend it. The final way Lucas used ethos was when he said, "I love the truth but can't handle it, tryna cover bruises with bandages..." This lyric evokes that everyone would rather have someone tell the truth rather than lie, but most people don't like it at the same time because the truth could hurt sometimes. Then the second part of the lyric continues the first part by implying that people tend to try and act like they aren't hurt when in reality they are, just like if you have a big bruise and try to cover it with a small band-aid, you can still see it.

Pathos Lyrics

Lucas didn't really focus on using lyrics to appeal to our emotions but there are some that I found. In the last chorus Lucas says, "I just wanna be like you, I wanna be anything like you, I just wanna be like you." Throughout the whole song Lucas repeatedly says, "I don't wanna be like you" and there is a very angry or frustrated tone until the last verse and last chorus which lightens the mood and gives a hopeful feeling. On the very last line of the first verse Lucas says, "My one issue, hope one day that shit does hit you, cause you so goddamn judgmental and I don't wanna, look." In this lyric he is wishing on the person to get karma, and it shows how much anger some kids have because their parents aren't on the right path. The last example of pathos Lucas used was, "When I feel lost and I'm confused and I'm outta touch with my young roots." Lucas uses this lyric to show the feeling of not knowing what to do, this lyric gives off a lost or sad feeling by giving an example in words of how these kids feel.

In this song Lucas uses mainly ethos and pathos throughout to display what he thinks kids feel like without the right guidance. I think he used the lyrics and video well enough to really put the audience in the shoes of the kids. Overall he does a good job at using ethos and pathos for both the lyrics and the video, and I think he does a good job at getting his point across about being/having a good role model to look up to.
