In the final scene of “The Elevator” by William Sleator, the Fat Lady locks Martin in the elevator to have a conversation with him. The Fat Lady was the owner of the building Martin lived in and had been stalking him because she noticed his fear of elevators and wanted to help him. She came up with a plan to help Martin overcome his fear and they both agreed to try it. The plan was to start at the 17th floor and descend floor by floor until they reached the bottom. Until suddenly when they reached the 13th floor the elevator malfunctions. The lights had gone out and Martin and the Fat Lady began to panic. Shortly after the elevator fell three floors before it had been caught at the stopper. Martin starts to bang on the open button until the doors finally slide open and Martin and the Fat Lady bolt out. They take the stairs to the lobby and report it to the front desk and now Martin will probably never face his fear of elevators.

Martin:Nico

Fat Lady: Jaxon

Narrator:Nico
