Yes, I was originally aware of these K-6 computer science standards. My current school/place of employment has computer science class as a specials class and students in grades K-8 are required to take it as part of the curriculum. I found out about the computer science standards while researching standards as an undergraduate student.

How do you (or might you) implement one of these standards in your classroom?

I think that schools with one to one tablet/device ratios for all students may have an easier time implementing computer science standards for their students and in their classrooms. I currently try to integrate technology use for my students into my lessons weekly. All of my students have an iPad that they use at school and at home for school work and assignments. I often try to allow my students to showcase their creativity and understanding through alternative assessments like online student created Vlogs, or through discussion applications like Padlet. I also just coordinated a Science Fair for my 7th and 8th grade students where they were expected to do all of their required written assignments for their project on their iPads. Students got the opportunity to practice using communication and collaboration skills and were also challenged to use technology to create visuals for their results (graphs, tables, etc.) and display board. Honestly, I feel that my students really learned a lot from integrating technology while working on their Science Fair projects.

I want to begin integrating Glogster into my lessons to check for student mastery and understanding of standards and content. I have just found out about Glogster and was introduced to it by another student in this class. Glogster seems like a great way to integrate student creativity, student accountability, student standard and content mastery, and technology skills. I feel that I could use Glogster to get my students to utilize their technological devices while preparing them for challenges for life outside of the classroom setting. Glogster would also allow students to be creative in showcasing their mastery of certain content through designing a poster, rather than taking a traditional test, which allows for more differentiated learning. I feel that being able to provide a variety of assessments for a variety of learners is most effective in my practice.

A.) iPads - Tablets and iPads are great for differentiated instruction. Teachers can assign specific Accelerated Reader stories and vocabulary words to individual student learners. They can also assist in creating student responsibility and accountability.

B.) Promethean Board - Interactive white boards provide teachers and students with ample opportunities for technological exploration through hands on learning activities. The Promethean Board can be utilized by the teacher when wanting to introduce students to a new concept through a video clip, or can be used as a game board for reviewing concepts with students before a test.

C.) Educational Applications - Apps can provide students with extra practice and reinforcement of specific skills related to multiple subject areas. Apps are great for differentiation and can also be utilized successfully in the classroom as well.

Personally, I do not currently participate in social media. I find that it adds too much stress to my already chaotic life. I do see benefits from social networking, but personally choose to avoid it (I am very unique as a 30 year old in today's world). As an educator, I can see many potential positives for my students through social media integration. Applications like Facebook and Twitter provide students with multiple opportunities to collaborate with their peers and other social groups. They allow for students to take ownership in their schools and school communities by letting them vocalize and publish current events in their lives and in the lives of the school itself. Social media can also give students a chance to practice real world technology skills that can later be applied to situations outside of the traditional classroom.
