The Da Vinci Surgical System is a robot that helps surgeons with precision and control while performing surgery. The robot has arms that hold surgical tools and is operated by a surgeon through a console. The system uses robotic and computer-assisted technologies to provide enhanced precision, greater control, force haptic feedback, and advanced imaging to help surgeons efficiently perform challenging procedures and improve patient outcomes. Through this innovation, there are shorter hospital stays, smaller incisions, which would lead to minimal scarring, less bleeding and risk of infection, less recovery time, and organs and functions remain intact. Some possible challenges would be a lack of teamwork and communication due to the surgeon being away with the console, a lack of adaptability to the fast-paced and complex healthcare environment, the size of the machine compared to the operating room, equipment problems, and more.

Future Trends and Ethical Considerations

Some future trends would be AI tools and systems playing a critical role in healthcare as more hospitals and clinics adopt and implement AI in their environment. Healthcare professionals would rely on it more to assist with daily tasks and provide the best care to their patients. As a result of this, there would be more productivity and efficiency in medical-related environments, as well as a lot of money being saved. Other future trends would include autonomous AI enterprise agents that would be able to make decisions without human intervention, AI coding medical documentation, many healthcare workers turning to cloud-based automation tools to easily access patient data, shorter patient wait times, more recruitment of medical staff through AI-powered HR tools, and medicine would become more personalized for patients. With the increasing development and use of AI in the healthcare industry, Potential advancments of AI would consist of AI software and tools that facilitate faster drug discoveries, a recution in healthcare disparities through AI-powered telemedicine, enhancing robotic surgeries, decision support tools to help aide doctors, AI enabled wearable devices to monitor patient’s health, and so much more that could help revolutionize the field of healthcare. Despite the promising future of AI in health-related settings, some ethical considerations could pose as barriers to the development. Some ethical barriers include AI lacking human empathy in a field where it’s a necessity, incorporating algorithmic biases into diagnoses and treatment, and an overreliance on AI that could potentially deskill workers and put employees out of a job. There are also concerns over the privacy of patients’ data and challenges involving transparency and accountability in decision-making. Nonetheless, I believe the healthcare industry could greatly benefit from the implementation of AI in hospitals and clinics, improving work-life balance for healthcare workers while also providing the best care for patients. I believe that with the further development of AI in healthcare, everyone benefits, and life is overall better; however, it’s essential to acknowledge that some challenges may arise. I think the most concerning challenge would be maintaining the privacy of patients because breaches can happen and expose patients’ confidential information.

Societal Impact

AI in healthcare can have a positive societal impact as it assists with a variety of tasks quickly and efficiently, improving the well-being of healthcare professionals, as well as improving treatment and care for patients, leading to a longer, healthier life. On the other hand, AI in healthcare can also have a negative societal impact. When it comes to AI involved with employment in the healthcare industry, there’s a trade-off. On one end, there could be more job opportunities and recruitment for people such as those involved in tech, but at the same time, there could potentially be job displacement for existing employees as there’s a growing reliance on AI. In my opinion, I believe AI can work side-by-side with healthcare employees effectively, but there needs to be boundaries set. AI tools should only be used to help enhance the work environment and assist with responsibilities, making it more efficient for both the workers and patients, not as a potential replacement. Another way AI in healthcare could impact society is by resulting in a lack of equity through biased results. There’s a lack of diversity amongst developers, and many of them aren’t fully aware of social issues. This produces serious consequences as certain groups of people aren’t given fair treatment in regards to health-related issues compared to other groups. There are already human biases in society that discriminate against minority groups, preventing them from receiving proper care, which can be fatal. Instead of AI implementing those same biases, I believe AI can be programmed to be more knowledgeable of people from different backgrounds while also providing unbiased and nondiscriminatory treatment. Confidentiality is an important aspect of healthcare, and AI uses a lot of patient data to help diagnose and treat, but this can lead to many privacy concerns. Without informing patients that their data is being used to train AI, there could potentially be a loss of trust between society and the healthcare system, turning people away from seeking out medical help and providing vital information that could be used to treat them. Data breaches could also occur as a result of not having adequate security systems, leaking confidential information that could lead to emotional distress and possible identity theft. But, with stronger protection of people's privacy with federated learning and regulations such as the EU’s proposed AI act, it can help restore trust among society to further use AI in healthcare settings, thus improving the livelihoods of people.
